SModcast 66
SModcast is the meandering palaver of a pair of dudes whose voices are so dull, they don’t deserve to be on the radio (and, hence, aren’t). Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are SModcast. The best thing about SModcast? It don’t cost nothing.

SModcast 66: Sleipner the Conquerer -
In which our heroes get political, war the world, and await the annual arrival of Odin.
[CONTENT WARNING] SModcast features harsh language and even harsher notions of propriety. Listener discretion is advised.

That story about Sinterklaas was very amusing! I live in the Netherlands and I grew up with Sinterklaas. And here is my take on the thing.
This is what kids are told when they are old enough to understand what it is…
Sinterklaas is coming from Spain with a steamboat, that is called “Pakjesboot” which means “Presentboat”. He arrives in November and the arrival is on national television(!). (check: http://rozekrokodil.web-log.nl/rozekrokodil/WindowsLiveWriter/Actie_1298D/intocht_sinterklaas_2.jpg)
Kids actually look forward to the arrival and the 5th of December, which is also known as “Pakjesavond” which means something like “present-night”. In the period before the 5th of December kids indeed put there shoes or boots at the backdoor or at the shimney, with carrots in it, because that, of course, is for the horse of Sinterklaas (makes sense?) and sometimes sing a Sinterklaas-song. The kids are also told that Sinterklaas walkes on the rooftops with his horse to put the presents trough the chimneys.(check: http://www.eringaroden.nl/sinterklaas/sp_dak.gif) The horse is called Americo or “Schimmel” and that translated (don’t laugh) is “Fungus”. The black-servants that Sinterklaas has are called “Zwarte Pieten” or just “Pieten” and that translated is something like “Black Pete” or “Black Peter”. The Pieten help Sinterklaas to bring the presents to the kids homes. In the old days (this is what parents tell you) kids where taken in a bag by Zwarte Piet and shipped back to Spain if you where naughty during the past year. They also carry a sort of stick-thing (don’t know how to say it in English) and kids are told they get a beating with it if they are naughty. (check: http://www.fopshop.nl/fotos/groep15/1552012176048.jpg)
In the Netherlands Sinterklaas is sort of the same as Christmas and we do celebrate that too.
Ironic to hear that Santa Claus is kind of a rip-off from Sinterklaas.
Great SMod by the way
October 20th, 2008 at 6:34 am
This Smodcast is better than the Jewish Bible!!! Rock On Troopers….rock on.
October 20th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Best. Smodcast. Ever. I cannot stop laughing.
October 20th, 2008 at 6:38 am
Awesome. I’ve been looking forward to this all week.
October 20th, 2008 at 6:46 am
This is brilliant as usual. It is more exciting that watching someone get a ” glass bottom boat “.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:52 am
I enjoyed the Smodcast as always, but Kevin and Scott’s English accents are atrocious, somewhere between Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins and Anthony La Paglia in Frasier (Van Dyke’s being marginally better).
I like the whole do Germans as English a la James Mason bit, but seriously you sound more Canadian than British.
As an Englishman, if you’re going to take the piss, I’d prefer a slightly better accent
Loved the German accents though, which I suppose makes me a bit of a hypocrite.

Thank you for this SModcast. I loved it. I will never think of Santa the same way again. Who knew he could take down an 8-legged horse?
October 20th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
As someone with a Finnish mother and someone who is in the process of becoming a Finnish citizen I am insulted.
I am also highly amused. Keep making with the funny, you hate tanks.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

October 20th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
The line “One in the neck” made me laugh until I cried
October 20th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
@ Jonathan Smith, I’m also british but unlike you i actually love their british accents. It’s the fact that they are awful which makes it so funny. So lighten up eh?
October 20th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
I love it. I just got the strangest looks from my office mates as I burst out laughing at your eastender Nazi’s.
They already think I’m slightly off kilter, but thanks to you guys my oddness was confirmed.

October 20th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
No one ever thanks the M of SModcast. Thanks Scott (and Kev, of course)
October 20th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Hey Kevin,
I know that Scott doesn’t know how to use the internet, but I wanted to make you both aware that I was totally shocked and excited by the fact that Mosier referenced This American Life, especially because the “Xing” episode is currently one of the old favorites that is on my iPod with this weeks SModcast. I’ve listened to every episode of TAL and as soon as Scott mentioned the Unicorn I knew just which one he was talking about. The full episode is here http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1090
Anybody who enjoys the mind numbing wonderment of SModcast out there would probably also enjoy the mind stimulating awesomeness that is This American Life.
Love the cast.
Kurt

Sound proof boof!
“That’s not true!”
man, I love Smod.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Whoa, Kevin! The population of the United States is not 50 million. California alone is close to 40 million. The United States as a whole is more like 300 million people.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Of course, I’m the dumbass who corrects Kevin’s demographic information on the wrong comments page. I’ll be in the corner, wearing my dunce cap.
October 20th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
FUCK YEAH. Now I’m fuckin hooked on smodcasts. You rat fuckin bastids!!!!
This episode was wacky, intellectually assaulting, and downright goddamn funny as shit
October 21st, 2008 at 8:41 am
“Where’s Antartica?” F@*k you guys are dumb! There’s obvioulsy no connection between intelligence and talent, luckily for you two monkeys. Wait, that was a little harsh, sorry. Hey, I love you guys though. Thanks for keeping us entertained, for free….Yeah, you’re right, I’m an a*%hole. I take it back, you’re not dumb, I’m dumb.
October 21st, 2008 at 10:00 am
thank you for making smodcast, its funny. But why do all the people who leaves comments try to blow so much smoke up yo’ asses?
October 21st, 2008 at 10:36 am
Here is a radio link about how the original War of the Worlds broadcast happened and how the incident was recreated again in another country. I think they talked about the possibility of it happening again in our current information age.

And as a Native of Billings, MT, thanks for the shout-out to us as a possible target for an imaginary alien invasion. I wouldn’t spoil the fun. I’m curious, where did that come from? Of all the small cities in the country, how did you pick that one? Awesome Smodcast, usual. Keep ‘em coming. Looking forward to Zack and Miri in a week and a half!
October 21st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I was waiting for you two to figure out why the whole thing about Santa Claus caught on. But you never did. You remember when you were a kid? Parents used Santa to try to get you to behave, to be good. Who’s naughty or nice. “If you’re good then maybe Santa will get you that for Christmas”. If the kid believed in Santa Claus, (and in them old days they probably did), them kids would straighten right out for sure.
October 21st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
awesome thx for quick release.
ps anyone know the song of this smod? sounds really cool.
October 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 am
Further to what Kev was saying, there was another war of the worlds type show in thr UK in 1992 called Ghostwatch.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostwatch
A couple of people killed themselves after seeing it.
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
You two crack me up with your English accents. They are pretty grim. But Scott’s reminds me of Dudley Moore in “Derek & Clive” mode. If you haven’t listened to any Derek & Clive I highly recommend it.

October 23rd, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Scott is right, we listeners do like the ambient noises. It DOES make us feel like we’re “there.”
Oh and someone totally needs to make some t-shirts with Scott’s catch-phrase.
“Scott Mosier says, Well, that’s not true!”
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Hey matt that is such a great idea!! lol
October 24th, 2008 at 5:37 am
That was an excellent Thursday appearance on O&A. You always bring that show up to the next level and the 103 inch TV in your bedroom sounds like it totally rocks. No wonder you get baked while laying back and watching flicks on your off days, I would too.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
the song at the begining is another believer by Rufus Wainwright for those who asked.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Hey Kevin, watching the Threevening dvd now and lovin it. Totally enjoying the part about the Entourage digs. Any chance of seeing you on Entourage some time in the near future? That would be a great twist seeing after they gave you crap to see you on there and being the person to bring Vinny Chase back to the top by casting him in a Clerks or Chasing Amy type of role!
October 25th, 2008 at 12:42 am
HUGE fan of Smodcast! Just got an iPod this past Christmas, and the first thing I did was download and listen to every episode! Follow the blogs and MySpace post (missing the Twitters though), and appreciate the videos you’ve uploaded. Just watched the “Inside the editing room” video, and wanted to know, How much has the editing process changed for you over the years with the advances in technology?
October 25th, 2008 at 2:08 am

October 26th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Every time you mock Lapland, Finland or Santa, one of the Sámi folks will be put out to get you and they sure are mean.
Thanks again for yet another brilliant episode.

You should really read the David Sedaris short story entitled: “Six to Eight Black Men”. It’s in his book “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” by David Sedaris. It’s about Christmas in some parts of the world. But mainly about the Dutch version. Absolutely f’ing HIGHlarious. Well I thought it was at least.

The effeminate Nazi makes me laugh.

Dear Kevin and Scot
As a British man who has listened to every Smodcast with absolute glee can I please congratulate you on your mastery of our British accent in particular your research which seems to be heavily influenced by Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady and Bed-knobs and Broomsticks.
Your accents are sooo accurate that they often stray into Australian which many British people do on occasion do as our culture is now heavily influenced by our Oz neighbors, many of them economic migrants in our towns and cities.
I find Smodcat to be amusing and informative and to anybody in the world that ever claims that Americans might be ignorant to other cultures and perhaps the largest parochial society on the face of this big blue marble we call earth, well I say balderdash!
These two yankee doodles have the chops to disprove you. Kevin and Scot give their time and talent for free to the world as American ambassadors.
Not to mention that for as many years as I can remember these artists have gifted the world with the complex and heartfelt celluloid wonders which chronicle the downfall of western civilization in a very unique manner.
I await ZAMMAP with glee.
I salute you sirs and all who sail in you!
A life long life Scewniverse citizen.
Rob : )
P.S. Please pass this on to my linguistic heroes, Kevin and Scot for their amusement and edification.
P.P.S May I Propose alter egos for these creations- That of Cor Blimey! ‘the Governor’ the broad chimney sweep and his ward Chimney Chim, who love to clean the sooty shoots of London town. Victorian heroes both!
P.P.P.S I know we Brits are portrayed as sarcastic, but in this case every word is true, serious comment is never better made than with comedy!
