SModcast 68

newhead2.jpg

Your TextSModcast is the meandering palaver of a pair of dudes whose voices are so dull, they don’t deserve to be on the radio (and, hence, aren’t). Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are SModcast. The best thing about SModcast? It don’t cost nothing.

Kevin, I would gladly pay you and Scott three dollars cash money for SMod.

    *biggest smile ever*

  29. Justin Says:

I don’t know what went wrong. I’m about to find out..

    But think about this:
Thousands.. THOUSANDS of people are going to listen to your thoughts. You matter that much to people. Take your high school, and multiply it by like 5 to 10 at least.. and there’s your basic audience.

For a filmmaker.. you’re used to it.. you’re used to crowds..

but dude.. in fact, dudes.. you’re fuckin LOVED.

KEN.. please make sure Kevin understands this from us.
Its not pity or shit like that.

He has inspired a small ARMY of people.. and that is fucking amazing. Good on him.. DVD will rock the house.

  30. partypooper Says:

SModcast #68 - In which Kevin and Scott lament over the (relative) failure of their movie in a thoroughly depressing and un-funny fashion.

So you wrote and directed a movie that everyone who saw it loved. Your fans, above all, loved it. You said specifically in the last smodcast that you were keeping your expectations low. And when your movie doesn’t blow up like Apatow’s have, you lay in bed for a month without any warning of a smodfast (I know its free and not a job for you, that’s cool. But could you throw a brother a “we’re on hiatus for November”?) And now that you’re back, you just complain your movie didn’t make enough money.

Seth Rogen does not equal box office bank. You’re a talented writer/competent director…you’re also my hero. But fuck this depressing shit…take another break and get over the box office.

  31. Sarah V Says:

I literally clapped and squealed like a fangirl when I discovered a new SMod.

    w00t!

  32. poop Says:

    There is a Smod!!!

  33. notjo Says:

you know guys you made an awesome comedy in a faltering economy. Lets face it people are all spending the money they have on thier children, thus high school musical. I couldnt make it opening weekend but was there following wed told everyone i know how even if you dont like kevein smith youll love this movie. I feel you did better the next weekend, all that aside you made 35million worldwide.

  34. Mike Duyn Says:

    What a great weekend!
New Smod and I got tickets to the Q & A in toronto in feb..
    Thanks mucho grando
    Mike D

  35. Tom from Pgh Says:

    SModfast II has ended!
    thanks, guys!

  36. Tim Says:

The smodrought has lifted and now all of the smod fans flock to the new smod like starving african children to a twinky.

  37. Jack Says:

    Is this the longest SMod?

  38. Matthew Burrill Says:

top grossing view askew movie ever and its a failure? lulz whatever i paid for it twice, enjoyed it, AND FINALLY AND NEW SMOD GOD BLESS U KEV AND SCOTT

  39. Tony Says:

Really glad to hear you guys back. Zack and Miri didn’t turn out like you guys were expecting, but I can’t help saying that it was still a great pleasure to everyone who DID turn out to see the thing. I loved it. If only I had a couple million friends to bring with me.

I really don’t think there’s anything you guys could do to make a SMod I won’t enjoy, unless it was announcing the end of SModcast. Hearing stoned Kev and Scott the Journeyman was so fucking funny!

    Looking forward to more.

  40. Eric Says:

    thank you sirs.

  41. Kevin DeBoyer Says:

Zach and Miri was a funny title and a typical generic romantic comedy with a couple gross out moments. You’re not the first people to shoot for the sky and get grounded. Accept it.

  42. Cameron Williams Says:

Harvey was right; the title ‘make a Porno’ is what killed the box office and that is on your head Kevin. It was a good movie, but when a Producer as successful as he is tells you to do something, then maybe you should listen to him and not a ‘Yes Man’ like Mosier, who is a good friend but not necessarily a good business associate. Now, suck it up, go on a diet and get your shit together.

  43. j.woof Says:

still haven’t gotten to see the movie down under but will enjoy the smodcast

  44. Kelly jo Says:

Smodfast II has ended now back to fight the war of starting my own podcast.

  45. Al Says:

I just soiled my shorts. Front and back. A sort of lonely-blumpkin if you will.

  46. Albert Says:

I just soiled my shorts. Front and back. A sort of lonely-blumpkin if you will.

  47. John Says:

You guys didn’t see this coming? With the shit from the MPAA and the pseudo-scandal over using the word porno?

Hate to break it to you guys, but having stick figures in the poster wasn’t going to work for two simple reasons. First, large audiences are fucking stupid, and can’t read. So they won’t know Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks are in the movie unless they can actually see their faces in the movie poster. Second, large audiences are fucking stupid. Even the ones who can read, wouldn’t know who the fuck Seth Rogen is, unless they could see his face in the poster.

What would you rather have? A sell out piece of shit like High School Musical 4 which makes a ton of money but which is loathed by any carbon based life form with more than 3 brain cells, or something that is really funny and really cool, and that even 10 years from now, people will be buying on DVD and talking about?

Christ, take a look at the box office returns for Resevoir Dogs sometime. Forget that it was Tarantino and his first movie. I’m talking about : Look at how fucking cool it is. How good it is. How people still buy it and talk about it 15 years later. How little money it made. How it had great big name actors in it. How no studio or cinema wanted to fucking touch it.

So you can’t buy a gulf-stream jet, or a villa in Tuscany with the profits. But you can fucking sleep at night, knowing you didn’t pollute the minds of your audience.

  48. Brian Says:

Sweet! Thanks for a new Smod! I’m taking my Silent Bob doll off my Jaws poster frame right now!

  49. shane Says:

wow a new smodcast and its a total fucking yawn fest.

  50. Jau Poon Says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS! We missed you!

  51. iscream22 Says:

I agree, the DVD sales of Zack and Miri will rock the house. Im making sure I PURCHASE it the first day its out

  52. mighyhorse Says:

kevin deboyer you are not helping. thank god for smod.

  53. mighyhorse Says:

    god bless smod

  54. Camm Says:

All the dicks who felt they were owed something and acted like jerks should have been made to apologize before they were allowed to download this.

  55. Cam D Says:

Saw Zack and Miri in theaters.
    Will buy the DVD.

Nice solid effort in the Return of the SMod.

    Thanks Gents!

  56. Dax Says:

holy crap…what did you guys think..it was gonna beat the dark knight…you have been making dick and fart joke movies for over ten years..dont get me wrong i love your shit..i always will..the dvds will probably make it more profitable..no need to kill yourself kevin..sounded like scott in the begining was like thinking like “will you just stop your fucking crying already and get to the point”…the movie is not bad..its a good movie…in my gut i have this feeling that if the word Porno wasnt in the title..it might have done better..just keep doing what you do best and all will be good with the world.

  57. Josh Says:

Thanks for the new cast, can’t wait to hear it.

  58. Says:

I wonder how many people out there (not the super-fans, of course) deliberately avoid seeing Kevin Smith movies in the theater, because they know the eventual DVD release will not only include extra scenes — and may well be an unrated director’s cut — and kickass extras? The wife and I saw it in the theater, but the thought of waiting did cross my mind.

Anyway, I still think Kevin needs to decide what it is he wants as a filmmaker. If he wants the brass ring of mainstream commercial success, he needs to make some tough decisions — stop casting his non-actor friends/wife in key roles, get a co-writer to curb some of his funny but non-commercial quirks.

If he wants to stay true to his idiosyncratic vision, he has to accept that he’s going to be a relatively fringe filmmaker for the foreseeable future. He isn’t going to be
Apatow, and shouldn’t try to be. He should give up all of his mainstream ambitions — which just water down his movies anyway — and just start releasing his films direct-to-disc or online. Bypass the studios entirely. I’d personally rather have that Kevin Smith than some generic family-friendly version of Kevin Smith.

  59. Erebos Says:

    Nice

    I was waiting

  60. peter J. Says:

    Riight on . . .Le’s GO!!

  61. Moobys37 Says:

Thanks, guys! I’m sure this message will get lost in the barrage of other thanks, but what the fuck; we’re greatfulf fans

  62. jabba Says:

    Kevin,
What happened to the ZaMcast? Did you not record it or did they stop you from releasing it? I think it could have improved your box office totals because I know I would have bought another ticket to see it with a commentary. Can’t wait for next week to hear the rest of the story.

  63. azm Says:

Welcome back, my favorite duo is back :)

  64. Anthony Says:

What happened to the ThingGeek intro?

  65. zane Says:

listening now, wow depressing. Hey guys you do NOT suck! fuck the numbers!

  66. Eric Says:

Opening that flick on Halloween killed it. The economy didn’t help.

  67. chuck Says:

    Smmmmmmmmmmmmmmmoooooooooooooooodddddddddddddd!!!

  68. Ducky Dale Says:

Kevin DeBoyer, I hope to God you put your heart and soul into something one day and fail. Big epic fail. Divorce, foreclosure, repossession, 35 years in jail FAIL. Douche.

  69. Peter J. Says:

It’s good to hear that you’re takin’ everything in stride, Kev.

I’m going to a funeral today (family but not immediate family), so this helps to make today a lil’ less dark. Many thanks and high-fives to both Scott and yourself.

    Peace.

  70. E. Donk Says:

Why are some people being douches about this? We’ve got SMod back, granted it’s not the greatest one ever, but it’s back, meaning there’s more to come. and if you’re really a fan of the guy, why not empathize with him, instead of telling him to quit bitching? you do realize that it’s shit like that that made him give up the internet, like he says in the cast. You wouldn’t tell your friend to just get over it if he came to you with his concerns, so when K. Smith reaches out via SModcast, take it for what it is and shut the fuck up about it because a real fan doesn’t berate his idol just because he didn’t give you what you wanted, Kevin DeBoyer. You’re just a tool trying to promote your own shitty cast.

  71. joebroadway Says:

Damn negros it’s about time!!! i thought you guys were dead. Saw the movie, it fuckin rocked. great to have smodcast back. Keep up the good work. Also just bought “Sold Out” DVD, fucking great.

  72. sam Says:

    YES! thank you!

  73. zane Says:

actually i thought it was a compelling Smodcast.

however in the haze the story got lost, kev was on the verge of blaming someone (he who dropped the egg containing the hope particle) …was it the editor of the movie?

  74. Bryan Says:

I had to clean the front of my pants! A new SModcast caused a love explosion. Thanks guys!

  75. JayBee Says:

I loved all of KS movies and all of the Evening withs… (just watched Threevening last night)

I owe alot to Kevin. His movies actually got my ass in gear and I did something with my life. A movie about 22 year olds with dead end jobs can do that to a 22 year old with a dead end job.

That being said… and I really enjoyed Z&M, I think I would have loved it even more if it was included in the Viewaskewniverse.

even just a slight nod. Jay & Bob don’t have to come back, it just needs that feel. The interconnectiveness.

that aside, love those dick jokes… love ‘em

  76. Alan in Wis Says:

    They fixed the margins!!!

I think the release date played as much a part of the low box office as did the ‘make a porno’… But I agree that people wouldn’t know Rogan without a picture. I don’t think that counts as stupid, because who the fuck is he, some actor? Like I care… I know who he is now because he’s in this movie. DVD sales will be Kevin’s best to date…

  77. niggz Says:

i thought u guys would get at least 30 mil opening weekend, but this is a true dvd hit cuz of the name, no kiddies could peep it, on dvd it will be your greatest DVD EVER!!!!! Keep your heads UP!

  78. Si UK Says:

Sucks to hear Kev sounding so low (and high…)
This UK fan did the first matinee screening and didnt stop laughing for 5 minutes after the ‘frosting’ scene.
Well looking forward to the eventual and hopefull directors cut (which i feel it deserves!!!)
Buy the DVD?? f*ck it im gonna buy it twice!!!

  79. PaPiTai Says:

There you go F_ukers, will you please leave Scott and Kev alone now! Wait, I’ll be Kev for a sec…

Here ya go you bottom feeding internet trolls!

    Now I’ll be Scott for a sec…

Hmmm, I feel like you guys are, my thing is, Oh! Lets go kill Ned down the street!

    ENJOY!

  80. Ken Derrick Says:

I saw the movie in theatres twice cause I became a fan of his long after ‘Jersey Girl’, which meant my first Kevin Smith movie in theatres was ‘Clerks II’. And I still don’t care if the DVD will be awesome, watching it in theatres with no distractions, around a group of people who want to see it is too great of an experience to miss. Plus, I’m not gonna wait an extra four months to see a movie I’ve wanted to since it was announced.

Now as for those people who complain about Mr. Smith bitching on SModCast, I want you to take a step back and literally fuck yourself in the face. As if you have the ability to get over a disappointment so fucking quick. Which if you do, probably means whatever it was didn’t mean that much to you in the first place. I think it was smart of them to take some time off and regenerate enough so that they can laugh about it now. Just another reason I respect both of these guys.

Yeah, the Halloween release date was an odd choice but I did my part. It just sucks not a lot of other people did too.

  81. Leonardo Leonardo Says:

Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!! I was afraid it was over! My SMod withdrawals have been eased. Thank you Kev and Scott.

  82. Ginny Muse Says:

So when the new iphone update came out it gave me the ability to download your podcasts directly to my phone and having always been a HUGE fan of yours I was so excited that I could download one whenever I felt the need. But for some reason after waiting over a month for this new one it does not show under smodcasts in my iphones itunes. WTF? Someone help me lol??!?

  83. Alan Says:

Ahh, absence makes the heart grow fonder. My head almost exploded just now. Thanks a lot Kev and Scott. Downloading 68 right now.

And because I haven’t mentioned yet, I saw Zack and Miri twice. Really good flick and I can’t wait for the DVD.

  84. Genevia Muse Says:

I got it NVM. I got it to stream via quicktime on my browser! Kevin I havent got a chance to listen to your podcast yet but from everyones responses it looks like your pretty bummed that Zach and Miri didnt do so well. I know were just fans so what we post isnt really a big life changer to you. But I just wanted to let you know that my boyfriend was recently in a horrible accident where he fell off a cliff in our National Park 75 ft. He was in the hospital for over a month and I played him your smodcasts while he was unconscious for several weeks. I know medical science and the grace of god got him through but I like to think that your humor and brilliance at least kept him upbeat and when he finally woke up he listened to them all day. So you kept a good guy alive, thanks!!!

  85. Kedzz Says:

No thinkgeek promo at the start?
Did the sponsorship deal fall through or something?

  86. Genevia Muse Says:

    http://www.lex18archives.com/watch?v=2248&list_mode=popular

There is the link. It happened a year ago today.

  87. JP Says:

I’m sorry to say I didn’t make it to the theater to see it until 12/3…but I’m SO glad I did.

I’m not sure when this was recorded, but it seems like you still made $35 million worldwide on a budget of $24M…that seems pretty acceptable to me!

I know it’s not what you were hoping for and I hate to hear the pain as you re-live the opening weekend and waiting for the numbers.

Maybe you should have called it Zack & Miri Make A High School Musical???

    Just a thought! :) (KIDDING!!!!!)

  88. RoBear Says:

The greatest Tom Brokaw by Mose

  89. andrew m Says:

For all of you curious, the box office numbers is the symptom not the disease. Two huge elements that determine a theatrically release movies success (financially) are Marketing and Distrubtion; two things that Kevin has absolutely no control over.

Kevin mentions bashing the studio on the mallrats dvd, he mentions Role Models and how well it did, being released just a week later. He acknowledges that his tastes aren’t always in mesh with everyone elses. But with this material, and this cast at this time, it would have done huge numbers. Kevin is taking the heat for someone elses fuck up.

The studio dropped the egg. Didn’t even get an omelet out of it, just some half-chick shriveled fetus.

  90. Drew Says:

Dude i know its not what you either wanted or expected, but the movie was fucking hillarious. I have not met a soul who has said an unkind word about the movie. Cut your losses but know you have made a hillarious porno epic!

  91. Spiderfan Says:

    Kevin and Scott,
Regardless of whether you guys read this or not I feel it has to be said. The under-performance of Zack and Miri is heartbreaking and understandably so, especially given all the positive press praising the film.

You guys got to make the movie you wanted to make and despite people’s close minded shock and disregard of the movie’s suggested content, you guys stuck to your guns and made not only a funny movie but a moving one at that. How many people can say that?? How many of these armchair internet critics can say they have made the movie they wanted to make??

Zack and Miri was some of your best work to date and to me demonstrates not only how you have grown as a professional and a human being but shows how the people around you have grown as well. It was refreshing to see a healthy, mature Mewes rawkin the scenes with a memorable performance.

And you got to make the movie you wanted with the cast you wanted, a cast btw that was beyond awesome from Rogen and Banks to the vastly under-rated Tyler Labine (who should be a great big fucking star right now…kudos for giving him a role, however brief).

So despite the disappointment of the box office take just keep in mind that you have continued to impress me with each outing and with each Evening With and Smodcast. The movie itself is something to be proud of and something that should inspire you to keep growing.

And as a wise friend once told me “Don’t sweat the petty stuff, and don’t pet the sweaty stuff.”

    Spiderfan

  92. Keith Says:

I saw the midnight showing and I brought along eight friends with me. Three days later I saw it again with four different friends. The movie was hilarious! Oh and thanks for the new smod

  93. D-Day Says:

Wow, Kevin was so blasted during this smod! Fuckin hilarious!

  94. doitdoug2001 Says:

I don’t know about the rest of the world but this film wasn’t marketed for shit in England. Just some crummy (cheap looking) ads on the side of buses.

And while I thought the film was very very funny it was rough around the edges. Like it could’ve used a little more work (I would’ve dropped the stuff about Miri becoming a youtube star in ten minutes and I thought a little more resolution was needed at the end- though I admit I missed the post credits stuff: but then I shouldn’t have to see these to see how things wrap up).

  95. doitdoug2001 Says:

Oh yeah- I noticed the lack of think geekness.

  96. Jason Says:

Yay! Mondays are good once again!

  97. Mars Says:

First ever post. Long ass post. “long ass post”… ha.

Look, I am fan, and I haven’t seen Zack and Miri. I’m broke, and I don’t have much time to see flicks these days. I know you were aiming for a wider audience than you normally pull. Honestly, when I saw trailers for Z and M, I thought, “Seth Rogen? He seems like kind of a douche bag.” His shit is funny, but kind of flavor of the month, and I think you might know it in your hearts at some dark place. You went with the flavor of the month, and it didn’t work out financially like you thought it might.

Keep this in mind; I saw Clerks when I was 12, and loved it and it mattered.

Saw the cover of Mallrats at the video store, and was like, “are those the fucking guys from Clerks?” I rented it, and when T.S. and whatever his girlfriend’s name is were talking about the girl dying mid-backstroke I was like, “Holy shit… it’s like a comic book universe! Shared continuity and crossovers and shit!”

I wached Chasing Amy when it came out, and loved it. Best movie you ever made, and you know it.

I liked Dogma. It was a great concept, and I have probably heard more people talk about it than anything else you’ve done.

Jay and Silent Bob was the equivilent of the comic book super summer crossover type film. “Crisis of Infinite View Askew” type event. Silent Bob was a flick for your fans, and you delivered all the shit we’d expect and more.

Jersey Girl was actually your third best film after Amy and Clerks. Despite all the bullshit that went along with it, I bet you guys know Jersey Girl was really good.

Clerks 2 came out. It was a busy time in my life, and I didn’t make it to the theater to see it. Bought the DVD and have watched it several times since. It was great to see the guys again, and it was like a trip to the old universe that I thought we all might not have an opportunity to take ever again.

All the way forward to Zack and Miri; Take this from a dude who took the time to sit and write all this bullshit down… I didn’t make it to the theater to see the movie. I will buy the DVD, and we’ll see what we see… but please understand that money is money, box office is box office… but when you have people who care enough to watch your shit and tell you that it mattered to them, that’s something different. The stuff you make, Q&A’s, Smod, all of it… it matters to me and hopefully that matters to you more than your payoff.

Now, make a movie without gay ass Seth Rogen, and make it small enough to be less stressful, and make it matter to your soul. It will matter to us too.

  98. Zer00 Says:

I’ll go and say since Kevin is the editor he wasn’t going on to blame himself.

He was more than likely going on to blame the marketing department, since considering the movie seems to be nearly universally good and not have a niche audience and was the PERFECT time for it to be released(not delease date but state of R rated comedies) then he meant the marketing. Even though the stick figures were his idea. But really the marketing started SO late in the game I’m sure that maybe that’s what he was referring to. Between the release date and lack of decent marketing, it’s the only reason that makes sense. Even if Rogen had suddenly become unbankable the movie wouldn’t have taken that much of a plunge, there’s usual a gradual fall over a few movies.

All in all this episode wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I was kind of dreading it since I thought it might be a lot of finger pointing and “why God why!?” but it wasn’t. It was realistic. I could have done without Kevin being high(now don’t call me a “hater” your favorite new word, you guys) but hey can’t complain this time, a free bitch o meter pass from me.

I can’t blame the people who don’t really like this episode…is a tad depressing since I think we all thought it would do kind of awesome because of Rogen. I think it would be different if the last episode wasn’t so “weak” or kind of the same as this, so it feels like the last normal episode of Smod was Sleipner The Conquerer(best ever dare I say) but I’m just so glad to have it back. I’m going to go masturbate violently to it.

    Anyway that’s my two cents.

  99. Harry Scotter Says:

nobody wanted to see zack and miri with me because it had porno in the title. they all did a ‘ew’ face and decided to watch a crappy animation sequel. z&m was great fun but the title fucked it big time. another lesson learned for kev i guess.

hopefully red state will do clerks 2 business and kev & scott can put this behind them.

someone told me that a director reliant on jay and silent bob should always include jay and silent bob in his films.

    yay or nay?

    this made my month!

  101. newman Says:

Am I the only one having trouble downloading this? It just wont start downloading!

  102. cost Says:

frak yes, don’t think i’ve never been this excited to get a new smod!

  103. JohnnyThief Says:

Man, this makes no sense. All the miserable crap they throw up on screen, insanely stupid & condescending, & this is what you go through with such a cool more like Zack & Miri? I’m with Scott, I find myself turning off movies all the time. I almost shot my TV watching ‘War, Inc’,… wow, that was insanely bad. I mean, Jesus Fuck, they’re making Ace Ventura JUNIOR. Someone shoot me.

It’s such a weird time we live in,… every fact of media has been so run over, dumbed down, & castrated, whether music, literature, art,… I mean, it’s so bizarre that we haven’t had a movement of ANYTHING in a decade. It’s unnatural. It’s like the entire consciousness of the country has been stilted. It skipped a generation.

Two illegal wars & sanctioned torture, & not one protest song on the radio. The fix is in.

So if it makes you feel any better, Kevin, everyone in every artistic field is going through the exact same thing. It doesn’t make any sense, when reagan was in office, & we all thought we’d die in a nuclear explosion, art & music were amazing. I don’t think you’re going to see a groundswell of movement in anything until these monopolies crash & burn,… & people really start waking up & living their lives again.

Thanks for being so open & honest, great Smodcast.

  104. NocturnalMatt Says:

Dear Mr. Smith, and Mr. Mosier, never disappear on us like that again! Oh yeah, movie kicked ass!

  105. NocturnalMatt Says:

Hey Newman, download VLC media player, i got it to work using it. Media Player Classic, and Windows Media Player both failed. Get VLC!

  106. DOUBLEYOUUUUU Says:

Hey Scott and Kev fuck all the people who didn’t see it , i love ZAMMAP and I went that seen that shit 2x opening Weekend, I tried to help with Box Office, can’t wait for you guys to redeem yourselves with the next movie :)

  107. Michael Says:

    FUCk YEAh!!!

  108. April B. Says:

Wow. . .I think Kev needs to get a little sober. o_o I’m sorry your movie didn’t do as good as you thought it would. I fuckin’ loved it. My dad and I went to go see it we absolutly loved it. I wrote a review for a website and my group of friends really liked it too. I hope everything works out for you Kevin. :]

  109. Santeria Says:

wow smodcast comes back…hell yea….and kevin smith is disturbed mildy disturbed …fcuk that hes defintly upset….happy that smodcast is his theropy so we get more smodcassts…funny that kev feels this way cause me and all you guys would b fuckin estatic if we made a movie that did as well as zack and miri..rely liked the movie saw it a couple times…Justin long scene was epic..kev dude me and my boy would b smoking as much pot as you parting wit bitches but def not being emo (dont get upset im jus playing) …im suprised that kevin is upset,,,i dont understand that,,,,wat would b the difference in his life if he did make 100 million…only thing i can think of is that he wants a award….wats u guys think???….Kev keep writing and making movies….the way u like tooo.peace

  110. Kim Says:

Sorry to hear you were/are so bummed Kev… But hopefully you’ll be ready to get back on the film making horse after the holidays and make Red State.

  111. Santeria Says:

If i ever c scott mosier in real life im gonna ask him 2 do his PARIS HILTON improv. hahaha

  112. EchelonAngel Says:

Missed you Kevin! Great to have you back!

  113. Dorene Says:

Z&M should have done better in the box office. Sadly it did not generate the right amount of revenue, but that doesn’t make it bad. It went up against 007 & that shallow HSM 2! We as consumers, artists, collectors and folks who support the entertainment industry need to step up and get behind the things we love. Hey, to the guy who pointed out that there are no major art movements in these troubled times…I agree! As an artist it’s very uninspiring, but I’ve realized it’s up to the artists to make it happen. This is my next art show project. And to the Kevin Smiths of the world, please keep doing what you’re doing! It does not go unnoticed. For every desensitized, apathetic person in the world there is one who cares about brand loyalty, awsome movies that reflect our times and who appreciates a director pushing to make a movie without compromising what they want to convey.

P.S. Thanks for the new SMOD! :)

  114. 4DOG Says:

I’m sorry you’re movie didn’t go over as well as you had hoped. BUT it was by far the funniest movie I’ve seen in the past 5 years, everyone I talked to loved the shit out of it and had nothing but good reviews, people didn’t want to go out i guess.

  115. Peter J. Says:

Kevin, I wanted to mention: Superman II was recut by Richard Donner. He went back and took out all the silly shit and cut it into the movie it was always intended to be.

Hopefully you fine this, or Ken sees this and let’s you know. Yes, you can get it in blu-ray. Enjoy.

  116. Husker Says:

Thought you had died, like a premonition from SMOD 67! Just kidding, glad your back. Glad I wasn’t stoned or would have thought I had gotten lost during the broadcast. Can’t wait for 69! Of course we all can’t wait for 69 so what else is new. Have a great week and enjoy those drinks!

  117. Shorty Says:

The Metallica track was called ‘one’. Very cool video, and if I remember rightly the first ‘tallica video ever.

  118. Jim Says:

The theater was almost empty when I saw Zack and Miri on opening Friday.

Needless to say, the box office numbers don’t surprise me at all.

  119. Goldie Says:

The Right stuff was not a box office success either. But look at it now!
I know the distributors dropped the ball big time on this side of the pond. Critics got no previews, so they couldn’t do reviews! Hard to sell a movie to the general public if you can neither say that its good or bad.

You will be redeemed with DVD sales.
I look forward to the 10 year redux, when you look back and laugh at how you felt about what you consider to be a failure..

  120. Yort Says:

ssmmoodd cast fuck yeah it seems like forever since the last one cant wait to here what the guys have to say and dont worry i will catch Z and M in the cinemas when it finally gets down under ( when is that, again )

  121. Matt S. Says:

Mxyzptlk is from the 5th Dimension, not the 8th.

  122. Kevin C Says:

Dudes!! I was so happy to see a new Smodcast posted!!! And I laughed my ASS off while listening to it. I knew it was going to be long, so I always try listening to it while I’m working…but I never get anything done because I’m rolling on the floor in hysterics!

I’m no expert and I may be wrong on this, but none of your movies were big box office winners, were they? Most of your loyal fan base is too broke to see it in a theatre, but we’d gladly pay for a DVD so we can enjoy it again and again! Zack & Miri was a hilarious movie, and did deserve more than it made, but once the DVD/Blu-Ray hits the shelves you’ll be smiling again!! (and I’ll have by big screen & Blu-Ray by then, WOOT!!)

  123. Mara Says:

Whether it was a failure or not, I saw Z&M twice in the same -weekend- because I loved it so much, and I’ve been raving about it to my friends and (over eighteen) co-workers.

And I’ll buy the DVD the first day it’s out. I’m already looking forward to the commentary. So be proud that you made a great movie.

  124. edward G. Says:

man you guys a funny as hell. i love SModcast. i love all of kevins movies and both these guys are great in the movie biz.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO WAS BADASS. CANT WAIT FOR THE DVD TO COME OUT. UP THERE WITH CLERKS AND CLERKS 2.

    THANK “YOUSE” GUYS

  125. Mike Says:

Chin up, drama queen. Your movie made $12 mil more than the Judd Apatow written/produced Walk Hard, and Walk Hard cost over $10 mil more than Zack and Miri. (P.S. Smodcast is back!! W00t!!!)

  126. DedJezter Says:

    Kevin,

FTLT here. Let me say that I and four of my friends all saw Z&MMaP 4 times. Twice opening night and the theater was packed.. I am sure some of the others from here did the same. I don’t understand what happened either. I guess some of your fans just don’t give a Frak. As seen in the comments from last Smods (#67)section.

Plus we all know your a Merch whore, so you’ll make it up on the back end. I already have my Zombies Jersey.

  127. Greg Says:

New smodcast on my first day of winter workfest before i go back to school!!!

  128. Daniel Says:

Good to have Smodcast back, the last 20 minutes were especially enjoyable. I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny Got His Gun on tv one time, that is one incredible film.

I saw Z & M Make a Porno and thought it was great. Looking forward to the dvd and hopefully the commentary track.

I’ve got plans over the next while to rent Roadhouse to hear the commentary track you guys did for it. Should be a real treat.

  129. gillian Says:

    im crying tears of joy.

  130. Kobrakai NYC Says:

The first half of this SMOD was the best ever, then out came the weed and the topic flew out the window. I believe the movie flopped because the trailer stunk and the stick figure poster was even worse. Nobody knows who Elizabeth Banks is by name, and they only know Seth Rogan by face. The poster & trailer only spoke to us, not the general ticket buying public. Role Models and Four X-mas had trailers with big gags for the masses, and Zack & M. didn’t.

In late October I was at a bar on the UWS of Manhattan watching football. The games were being shown on flat screens with no sound. The crowd continuously laughed at Stifler getting smacked in the face by the little kid in Role Models, Vince Vaughn getting beat up in his living room or Reece W. getting thrown up on in the 4 X-mas trailer. The Zack trailer was met with quiet confusion. What was the big moment(s) in the trailer to grab a non die hard? An 80’s porn star popping a bubble? It was too inside of a trailer & marketing campaign. Anyway, that’s my take.

I saw the movie opening day and loved it, but it was not marketed properly at all. I think Kev was going to say that with the Egg analogy before he got stoned. Hang in there guys. At least you didn’t flop with a turkey…..the movie was great.

  131. Jamo Says:

The Internet is a happy place again!

  132. G Says:

amazing how k can go on forever about nothing and make it sound interesting
    respec

  133. Buggie Says:

There was a stack of crap happening around October 31st that made it a difficult time to release a film like Zack and Miri - economic downturn, a monumental election, two or three huuuuge films with very clear markets - I am sorry Z&M got caught in the tidal wave, but I look forward to see the stronger, brighter, smarter, more resiliant KS creative venture that rises from these ashes. If this smod is anything to go by, it will be awesome …

  134. alex Says:

Funny how Kevin complains about being around drunk people yet has gotten stoned on SModcast twice, both times being the only person to do so. Lay off the weed, man. At least while you’re recording.

  135. tim Says:

OMG I DIDNT CHECK IT LAST NIGHT!! been so long ive grown used to not checking missed this sooooooooo much love you kev and scott

  136. michelle Says:

glad to hear a new smod. isay that if kevin wants to get high and be upset, it’s his right. dont call him a drama queen– its heartbreaking when something you do for someone else is not loved like you’d hoped. you put so much of yourself into something, and its quite a buzzkill to hear negative reactions. that being said, i find it strange that all of you seem to think that it was immediatly the studio who is to blame. im not saying that is incorrect, however, my mind immediatly went to the actors. hmmmm. who knows. we will find out next week. liked the movie quite a bit– i still give the edge to chasing amy as my fav, but good nonetheless. and for those of you that say it needed jay and bob, i think it was refreshing to see something that was an independent thought from the other movies. Personally, i cant wait for red state. i dont know anything more than anyone else, but it seems from what we’ve heard that is certainly going to be something different. yes we may fall into love with and actor, filmmaker, etc. for what their staples are but it can really be amazing when they go a different way. i mean look at say jim carrey’s dramatic roles versus his comedic. i was a little trepidacious to try those out, but look at the wonder it garnered me. he was amazing. so dont give them shit for trying something a little different. i mean who wants to go to work and do the same thing everyday? a “cubicle” of a movie can get stale, no? k. thats enough shit from me.

  137. Alex D. Says:

    @alex

he’s gotten high on wayyy more than 2 smods, you can hear it from his voice and the way he talks, listen to the early stuff then listen from 57 and up and you can tell he’s high on a bunch of em

  138. Steve Says:

If I had to discuss with complete, brutal honesty how something I had spent a year of my life on went terribly, I would want to be high too. Glad to see Smodcast functioning as a kind of cathartic therapy. Mosier totally has a career as a shrink if he wants a break from producing. Zack and Miri was fucking hilarious guys, keep up the good work. Roll on Red State.

  139. Arthur Says:

How amused I am to see all the “Fuck Kevin!”, “I’ll never buy your shit again”, etc crowd trying to bow back down and lick on his nutsac now that Smodcast is back. You people must believe Kevin to be entirely stupid.

  140. Prison break just turned into a spiderman plot. Says:

Kevin, could we be seeing Clerks 3? in which Dante and Randal find them selves Lost in their lives once again, this time because their Suger mama, (played by seth rogan) fails to earn them a shit load of money, and spend ten years trying to recover, sending the quick stop into bankruptcy.

we could call it Clerks 3: what the fuck happened?

My guess is we see this movie before we see red state.
Which is a shame, because I’d love to see it. But I’d also like to see another view askew some day. thank god for the end of SmodFast.

  141. Rebecca Says:

Thank you! I have been missing Smodcast. Let me just say that I saw Zack and Miri the second week of release and the theater was packed and everyone was laughing! We had a great time and I loved the movie.

  142. Sabrina Says:

Hey ! I have to precise that i am from Canada, Montreal! I am A girl and 18 , i also concinder my self okay ( not hot but cute all to say i am not a girl you would think that lisen to smodcats)! I have been lisening to all of them since last year you guys are so awesome. I sometime lisen to it at college while i am doing home work and sometimes i just giggle and people around me looks at as if i was crazy! Opps ! t hi hi hi hi! I saw all your movie which no matter what people think about it is So Awesome! I just wanted to tell you one of my main reason i want to be a film maker its because of you guys. So thanks alot !! Keep up the awesome work cause you rock ! ( Oh kevin i understand your fear for the ocean! I so terrified of lakes, oceans and what ever waters that can have a living creature in it!)
    Sabrina from Montreal, Canada !

  143. Glasgow Gal Says:

The movie was not a flop!!!! I took 4 of my friends who have never watched a Kev film in their lives to see it and they all loved it! I have to say though the marketing over here in scotland left a lot to be desired! A couple of crappy bus ads and tv spots than ran for less than 10 secs! The halloween excuse doesnt really count for us as it was released a few weeks later over here. Nevertheless I though the movie was fantastic and everyone that i have spoken to who has seen it thought it was fantastic and i will be eagerly anticipating the DVD release and will probs buy several copies (DVD, BluRay, Download for iPod etc..)

So keep your chins up and hold your heads high! The movie rocked and it will stand the test of time. How many ppl do you think are still gonna be watchin HSM in 5-10 years time eh?

    Peace out xx

  144. Klinger Says:

yeah, my mind went to the actors, too….but only to make
a joke about it on this board…”there’s an elephant in the room…” Kevin said, and I was like “yes! Damn Craig Robinson! You totally f*cked the movie up!”

I kid, of course, and I’d be totally stunned if Kevin blamed any of the actors. That would be insane.

Unless there’s some aspect of things that we don’t know (and, man, am I ever in suspense! Counting the days ’til part 2!)…it seems clear that it wasn’t advertised well.

Here’s my take on it..and I’m in Canada, not the States, so I could be way off. But here, all the ads took the word “Porno” out and just called it ‘Zack and Miri’. Even the late-night ads!! To me, that screwed the intrigue of the title (even my Dad, who is not a movie guy at all, somehow heard about the controversy of the title!

I think that title would’ve drawn people in, not turned ‘em away!

Number two is the commercials themselves, which were not good. They didn’t sell the movie. I mean, we fans were
going to go to this flick regardless, but I was stunned at how bad the commercials were. They didn’t show Seth proposing to Miri, saying “Will you have sex on camera with me for money?”

The ads just didn’t sell the concept. Anyway, that’s my guess as to what the Colossal Blunder was.

Hopefully they’ll be allowed to talk about it next time, and won’t be shut down by the powers that be!

  145. Klinger Says:

sorry to ramble so long, there:

    one other thing…

    Kev, Scott and Ken

This was an EPIC Smodcast! From the great theme song (Ken is turning me into a huge Kinks fan!) to the mystery of what went wrong, the emotion, the more serious side of both Kev and Scott…just awesome. Thanks a ton for coming back to us!

The movie did NOT bomb…it broke even, the dvd will rock and make more money, and Kev and Scott will make more movies.

    All will be well!

Here’s wishing you the bluest sky…

  146. Klinger Says:

    …okay, last one, i promise…

“elephant in the room that nobody’s talking about…” just want to be clear that I wasn’t cracking on Craig Robinson’s size or something….just picked a name. I could’ve picked Traci Lords. Just in case it came off mean.

Though Mr. Mewes’ piece could be the elephant in the room, come to think of it…

  147. PaPiTai Says:

Hey bro, to every Clerks there’s a Mallrats and to every Mallrats there’s a Chasing Amy… If you want to see it that way, you’ve been down and came back up… I love everything you do though, so I’m a little biased. If it makes you feel better:

Let’s go kill Ned down the street!

  148. Taylor Says:

Jerry Seinfeld uses the exact same analogy about carefully exchanging an egg on the Seinfeld season 6 DVD. Knowing virtually nothing about the business myself, I found it fascinating that two professionals would use identical metaphors to describe their work.

  149. Adrienne Says:

There are 2 parts to this?

I understand you’re probably a bit down over the numbers.
It was probably not advertised enough? Maybe don’t do romantic-comedies anymore? They tend to be a tad corny. Hope there wont be a part 3 to the sad stuff and that you don’t fall into alcoholism, getting done up the choccy starfish in a back alley, sobbing….Well I liked the flick.

    Smile, you’ve a great job.

    Apathetic Canadian

  150. Marcus R. Says:

    Happy days are here again!!

  151. Papa Jimbo Says:

Fear not fellas. There is a second life on DVD. I’m a father of 4 and can’t find the time to get away w/my wife to the theaters ever. I do however buy a ridiculous amount of DVDs. When Z&M comes out it’ll be at the top of the list. I have all your movies on DVD and even ended up giving up originals to rebuy special eds. Anyway, you can’t always judge success by the numbers. I’m sure the movie is incredible and I can’t wait to see it. Keep the smods comin in the meantime.

  152. Ken Seiler (sylar) Says:

don’t let the way this movie was received put you down Kev, you once said your movies kinda found their audience, and this movie will too, i have seen it twice, i think it’s amazing and i plan to see it again. you may not of grossed the way that you anticipated but things will pick up, they always do! Keep up the smodcast!

  153. stillafan? Says:

I saw Zak and Miri and honestly its really just not that good. Its not that funny. Maybe that is why it did not do that well. I think Kevin needs to move on from this type of movie. You have done it and done it better in the past. Move on! I knew people would be on here making excuses for Kevin Smith and I know you guys are big fans and you would support his shit no matter what. But to an average movie person, if you see that movie, it has like a couple of big laughs and the rest of it is not funny at all! The marketing was fine. The posters were fine. The title was fine. Remember controversey is a good thing. Its the reason people saw Dogma. Its the reason people saw Jersey Girl. Now because of the title, people are not going to see it? Give me a break. Word of mouth killed the movie.

Lick your wounds kevin. dust yourself off. get healthy and try your hand at making a drama or a horror flick. hell try romantic comedy again but stay away and off comedy like this.

  154. sean Says:

Come on guys! you made a movie that everybody loved. The funniest movie you made. You opened at number 2 and it’s the high grossing movie you guys did. That to me is a victory. the movie was in the top ten for four weeks. What the fuck do you have to complan about! It was heartbrecking to me that you guys think this movie is a bomb cause it wasn’t. Great fucking movie.

    Sean

  155. R Says:

It’s about FREAKIN TIME! Thanks guys, much love…

  158. howard Says:

SOOOO good. thanks guys. sorry about the bad news. everyone bought a ticket… :(

  159. R2J Says:

Just a thought…is Kevin a victim of (a) modern technology and (b) his own generosity? Point being - I still love their work - but have had ZERO inclination to go to the theatre for the last two flicks - knowing full well that for an extra few dollars a short time after release I can purchase a DVD that I can watch in the comfort of my own home along with so many extras that the value added to the package makes it totally worth the wait.

If he didn’t put out such exhaustive home versions with documentaries, amazing commentaries, and other bonus features I would be more that willing to go to the theatre first…having said that - the quality home product makes me want to hold out just a little longer thereby skewing the over-important box office openings should this practice take place a few hundred thousand times over.

  160. jfred Says:

Lay off the weed man! smodcast is better off the weed!

  161. Aceles Says:

Alright, people, lay off the gentleman. Maybe the people who are telling Kevin to suck it up have never put their creative energy out into the world–that’s what I have to assume. When you spend an entire year throwing every part of yourself into making something, and then you’re hyped up by everyone around you to believe it will do well of COURSE you’re going to be disappointed. The people who are ragging on Kevin frankly disgust and sadden me. You’re not really a fan of someone if you’d lash out at them for being disappointed that something they worked so hard on didn’t do as well as you anticipated. Have you never not gotten what you wanted for Christmas? What spoiled brats you sound like.

As for you, Kevin…I hope things get better for you soon. For your own sake, sir, lay off the weed and try to diet. I know all your fans support you and are looking forward to seeing you rise above all of this.

  162. alano Says:

“My movie didn’t make money…I did everything I could, but no one went to see it. Everyone’s getting laid off from their soul-sucking, horrible jobs that they don’t want but need, but I get to direct movies that no one watches…”. I paraphrased that, but I could only listening to the droning about how much your life sucks for two minutes (literally).

Look, jackass. You make silly, ridiculous movies. You like them, and a handful of people really like them. That’s the deal. You’re not Sidney Lumet, you’re not even Jon Favreau… nor do you want to be. Stop smoking weed, eat a salad every once in a while, and stop crying that no one gets you. You have a whole world of people that get you.

Yes, your last movie was good. You did every thing right. You had the right star, “porno” in the title (edgy? Maybe in the 80s), and blah blah blah. What, it’s your turn? Guess what, douchebag: you had your turn. It was called Clerks, and Chasing Amy, and Dogma, and everything else. You have a career, making movies that you like, with all your inside jokes and inconsistent directing. You get to work with your friends, eat all day (apparently), wear shorts all year, and complain, complain, complain.

Sit on the side of your beloved NJ Turnpike and watch every car go by. You see who are in those cars? Every single one of them would love to trade their life for yours. BTW, your old Jersey self would have kicked you in the nuts listening to you.

What do you want? You want everyone walking around in one of your fucking hockey jerseys? Sell them at the Gap? Then you’d complain how Hollywood made you sell out, how you wish you could go back to Red Bank, and just “be”.

Suck a bag of dicks, re-focus, get a job at a fuckin’ auto plant, and make a movie about that. Call it Auto-Erotic and have McLovin play “you”.

I hope you give that gift horse to someone else this Christmas. You’ve been staring at its mouth for so long, might as well be a dentist.

  163. papadoc Says:

Smodcast is definitely better when Kev isn’t high. That Seth Rogan is a totally bad influence.

  164. Kevin DeBoyer Says:

Zach and Miri Make a Porno…FUNNY TITLE.

Zach and Miri Make a Porno…generic, unfunny, and heavy-handed attempt at a romantic comedy.

It didn’t deserve to be a box office hit because it wasn’t that good.

Not a knock…try again, I loved your other films (except Jersey Girl…and this one).

  165. Constantine Says:

    Kev and Scott,

Thanks for working through your collective misery to give us a new SMod. I’m happier than I was the first time ‘ole Odin One Eye came to visit on Sleipner and fill my boot with candies.

  166. jaems Says:

At least they’re not like Australia’s Baz Luhrmann, staring at an 80M-pluss loss.

  167. Mike Mercer Says:

Fuck Yeah! Smod the God is the Rod to the fuckin Pod!!!!

  168. Mike Mercer Says:

and stop listening to the fuckin punters Kevin! The film was funny and entertaining - sometimes the masses just don’t get it - because most are freakin stupid!

  169. Alex Says:

ive started smoking weed last year i only gained 3 pounds at most, im a larger dude (tall and a just over average weight),i eat alot of food when i get high and i still dont get nearly as fat as kevin,he should get checked out to see if he has like a major stomach problem.

ps. i would love to get high with kevin,i bet he gets that good california clinic shit!

  170. I Still Believe Is A Great Song Says:

Hey DeBoyer, your podcast sucks. Work on your own shit before you insult someone else’s. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, fucknut.

  171. Spike Says:

This movie failed because it was marketed wrong. First of all you should have filmed additional fake porno movies with Rogan (That wouldn’t be in the actual film) and released them on the internet. That would have got the buzz happening. And the poster should have been a full body shot of just Rogan in a fake porn outfit. (The pool cleaning guy etc.) If you did those two things you woulda made 30 mil in the first three days. But you didn’t, so go smoke some more weed. By the way you dudes should totally do another Jay and Silent Bob film, where they gotta go on a more ‘insane’ adventure. For example a mission to hell, or outta space, or they get sucked through a portal to another world. Imagine Jay and Bob meets Alice in wonderland. that would be cool. Big fan, keep up the good work!

  172. I Still Believe Is A Great Songs Says: Says:

    On second thought…I was wrong.

  173. Isaac Says:

Zack and Miri is the funniest movie I’ve seen this year. I almost pissed myself listening to Justin Long’s character. The DVD will be on my shelf the day it’s out. But this SModcast? I started it ecstatic with the hundred minute time stamp, but the longer it went on the more depressing it became. Then you cock teased us for another hour by not finishing your story. I don’t know what it feels like to create something great and have it perform worse than it rightfully should have, but dwelling on what went wrong will only result in another hour long downer in the next SModcast.

Make a good meal, smoke a joint, and watch your movie on that big fuckin’ TV of yours. And do it without thinking of the numbers or who fucked up where.

  174. Fel Says:

YES!!! Rejoice!!!!! it is finally here, it has been so long! Thank you guys!

  175. venice98 Says:

I’ve got to say, after waiting like 5 weeks for a Smodcast, the excitement I experienced when I finally saw a long awaited smodcast put up, something I checked on daily, was kind of destroyed by the whole vibe of the smodcast itself. I actually had to stop listening to it because it was making me too depressed. A first for any smodcast. or podcast. I love these guys too, which is why unlike some on here, I do feel for them, but listening to it I felt like a paralyzed person being pulled into a field of quicksand. however, becuase I like finishing things, I will probably resume tomorrow, which I’m sure I’ll kick myself for later.I swear, Kevins slow, deep, exauhsted drawl throughout the smodcast, and Scott’s sad-but trying to put a positive spin on it-attidtude made it hard to bear. Maybe this is what they needed, a place where they could just let it out and breathe.

I hope life is better for them soon, and that the usual and expected vibe of smodcast is revived.

  176. Ken Derrick Says:

I have no idea how anyone could complain about this new SModCast. Scott Mosier recording your voice mail is officially one of my all-time favourite bits in the history of SModCast.

  177. Devin S Says:

Its good to here their view of this though! and it sucks when things out of your control limit the potential of an accomplishment. But it doesn’t change the accomplishment itself.

They should take pride in the fact that it was outside of their control, and they made a terrific film.

I’m sure it will make good money on DVD, and my wife who has never liked a KS film wants to BUY this, when it comes out.

  178. Darth Chimay Says:

Let me start with saying I loved this ‘cast. It was bloody hilarious. Scott, your “impressions” are priceless. I only wish I could see them.

That said, I want to apologize to both of you. I could sit here and make excuses for why I didn’t see the movie (I’ve been in crunch for the game I’m working on since September; I moved to a new state in August where I don’t know anyone; I don’t like going to movies alone) but they all seem hollow. I make video games for a living, and I have to admit that I always feel a twinge of sadness when a friend of mine doesn’t buy my game. We’re not friends (though I’d like to think that, if we knew each other in real life, we would be; or we’d be mortal enemies who had to brandish weapons each time we saw each other), but I still feel like I let you down by not going to see Z&M, so I want to apologize. You may say “Well, that’s just one person, so it doesn’t matter,” but it does because it’s all based on small decisions. Yeah, I might’ve only added $10 to your total, but there might be a hundred other folks just like me who love your work and didn’t see Z&M for a variety of reasons. That right there is $10,000 dollars. And a hundred folks is a minuscule compared to the entire country, but those stats do add up.

So, again I’m sorry for letting you down. I sometimes forget there’s a person who is affected by my choices.

  179. MJ Says:

I love stoned smodcast! I’m laughing my ass off over here. Thank you for the smodcast on my b-day! I’m sorry you’re so down about the movie. :(

  180. Bailey Says:

You guys are crazy! Kev ought to do all the smodcasts high! So hilarious.

I’m eager to hear part two. I can relate to miserable months, so I certainly don’t mind listening.

  181. steve Says:

the movie was good, and funny. but it came out on halloween. when people were obviously gonna pick saw instead. then it had to go against role models. and as much as i love kevin smith movies, role models was funnier. it was just bad timing. and the title and posters didn’t help much.

  182. Buggie Says:

Holy fucking Christ, did someone actually apologise for not seeing the film? What the hell is that about?

This is certainly the best KS film since Clerks. However, it is far from being a film you should feel compelled to see. It is a giggle fest. Just a little too thin to support the story. Fortunately there are a few classic laughs along the way that save it.

    Wait for the DVD.

I think the Smodcast journey around the films is way, way, way better - now THAT should be boxed up and sold.

  183. Justin Says:

    To a lot of you:
WTF is your problem.. If Kevin wants to do a Podcast about Cheese helmets, its his fucking podcast.

You know what.. this podcast is the only SmodCast I ever changed plans to finish. I was involved in the story, and I’m eagerly awaiting next week.

And Alono.. What is your problem.. If you’re such a hater why did you download the podcast in the first place? Its confusing..

These are your J&SBSB talkbackers, Kev. They don’t represent the majority. We’re stoked you’re back.

  184. Dude Says:

good math man… $10 x 100 people is $1000, not 10 thousand. And you do what for a living?

ps.Boring cast. you had a month to cry about it and you still chose to complain the whole boring ass podcast…

  185. papadoc Says:

Where are people apologizing for this movie? I saw it. Thought it was good. These apologies and “don’t listen to the haters” has to stop.

I swear Kevin sounds like a total sell-out. I didn’t hear shit about the artist quality of the film or that kevin really “had something to say” like Chasing Amy.

All I heard was a goddamn studio exec sell-out wannabe cry about how the “parts didn’t add up to big box-office numbers.” Great, you’ve turned comedy in a formula for money.

And Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks, jesus, good job with getting suprising, orginal actors. They are so played out. As a filmmaker with his pulse on the entertainment world, Kevin should have known that by the time the movie came out he’d be getting those two’s sloppy seconds performances.

Come on, man. Think of something original. DISCOVER TALENT. Don’t just fucking rehash played our actors and then ride the “who’s popular with guys 18-24″ train. If not, then become a studio fat-cat. I’m sure Bob or Harvey will put you in a junior exec program of some time.

Next film, do a biopic of George Carlin’s life. Do something meaningful, something you OWE to the world. Find some new TALENTED actors.

  186. mikey j Says:

honestly, i liked the movie. i laughed a LOT. my friend’s that saw it loved it and also laughed ALOT. the movie had seth rogan, hell the movie had half the cast of 40 yr old virgin. it is hard to understand and i sympathize for kevin. that being said, kevin- you are the dvd midas man. i predict this movie is going to be huge on dvd. my only criticism of the movie (which, like everyone else on this board, doesn’t really matter) is the hughes like romance. in a movie entitled “zach & miri make a porno” the cheese is a little thick. in mallrats - the romance makes sense. chasing amy - obviously makes sense. even the sentiment in dogma is understandable. this movie didn’t need as much romance as it had. forget about opening weekends and what the weinstein’s think. make your dvd as thorough as you would for any of your bodies of work that you loved, as you say you do on this film. i just heard on the smodcast you might not do a commentary…..FUCK THAT. your loyal audience deserver the pleasure of hearing you speak over your body of work. it’s what you do best and ive already told people i can’t wait for the dvd because it’s going to be great. keep your head up, do what YOU WANT to do and fuck the rest of the people that constantly chime in with their 3 cents worth of no sense.

  187. Peter J. Says:

I congratulate you on putting the cigarettes away Kev. I just quit smoking too - it’s been a couple weeks now. I don’t miss it so much, but I’d miss it even *less* if I had some herb to puff on.

Smoking weed is every persons own choice. Like drinking coffee, or being vegetarian. ‘Yes’, those comparisons are absolutely apt.

Anybody whom wishes to demonize others for smoking pot, is a massive TOOL(!) Marijuana is medicine for a lot of people whom smoke it. A LOT!!

  188. Peter J. Says:

I thought about this months ago (around the time of his death); and a Carlin biopic would be good. You’d have to cast Russell Crowe for the lead though . . . not exactly “unknown”. As long as you don’t cast Courtney Love as his fucking wife, then I’ll count that as a victory.

P.S. That movie would make fucking BANK! Loads of jizz . . .

  189. Max Says:

I really felt like the emphasis of the movie (and of the title and marketing) was on the “Make a Porno” part and not on the “Zack & Miri” part. The strength of the other KSmith movies was character and dialog. Plots are perfunctory.
If you called it “Zack & Miri on the Edge…” then the emphasis and marketing would’ve been more on target. And you would’ve been more set up for future Zack & Miri/Andy Hardy titles.

  190. Chris Y. Says:

They have a right to be upset as they want to be about whatever the fuck they want to be bummed out about.

Most of you live in the USA , a place where no matter how bad it gets it’s still not that bad compared to most places in the world. Most of you live a life that it far and away of better quality than any given person in some places. Yet I’m sure you still bitch moan and whine about your little set backs too.

Get off your high horse, you put your time into a project if it don’t go the way you wanted it too your going to be affected.

Besides how many times did one or both say, they know it’s a good job if you can get it, it’s just a bummer to see this outcome.

Bottom line is there are places they can go to read all of the hugs and kisses dick sucking posts ( like this one maybe?) and there are places they can go to get hard hitting sharp and cruel opinions. In the end neither of the two will matter, KS and SM will go on, make movies, make money.

I close with a loosely quoted segment from an evening with ” I go to the internet and see all of the posts about how I’ve made a flop and i’ll be out of work. I got news for you as long as I make even a little bit of money for the people who invest in my movies I’ll always have a job.”

  191. Blake Says:

That smodcast was very disturbing to listen too. I suspect that there won’t be many more left. It sounds like he is really fucked up in the head right now and sitting around feeling self pitty for himself and escaping into drugs. He makes so many excuses for his movies. I’ve never heard him take any responsiblity for any of problems he’s expereienced at the box office. I was always a fan of this guy because he seemed so honest and smart. It’s painful to see people you looked up too, falling apart at the seems. The movie was good, but I think it earned exactly what it should have. He makes mediocore movies and is lucky enough to make more money in a year than most of will see in a lifetime. I’m tired of listening to him brag about all his money and now listen to him whine that the movie underperformed. This guy is so far away from reality it’s unbelievable. It’s almost like an inside view into how and why people from hollywood fall apart and swan dive into self destruction. I was a huge fan of view askew, but after listening to this guy for a year on smodcast I don’t think I care anymore. It’s sad.

  192. Erin Smith Says:

I have an idea of why the box office was lower than expected. It was playing at the same time as High School Musical. My proof – I dropped my 13 year old off at the movies to see HSM with some friends and instead they snuck into Zack and Miri. I am sure they were not the only people underage to pull this trick, I did the same thing at that age. I paid my good money to see it and loved it. Sorry my kid saw it for free. (and at age 13) But we both loved it at least.

  193. John Says:

I feel bad now, i think im gonna buy the dvd when it comes out….

  194. Kris Says:

Think of it this way. They have made the money back as of now. But there are plenty of places the movie hasnt opened yet. When it opens in AUstralia, there will be more money coming in. There is a massive Kevin Smith fanbase over here in Australia, and they will certainly go ad see it. There are plenty of places it hasnt been given a chance yet. And it will definitely make some serious bank when it hits DVD. No need to get all down and out about it yet. There’s still a long way to go. Kevin has never been fully embraced by America the way that Australians and British audiences have followed his work. While it would be good to have a bigger fanbase in America, the guy is never going to be a Spielberg. Just leaving out all the Askewniverse stuff isn’t enough to get people to go and see it. If you want a massive big opening, you need a blockbuster. And Kevin has never done that. If he wants the big success, he needs to devote more than a few months to a film. He needs to write and direct something huge. Something with gloss and explosions, and sexy women, action, and a huge story. Nothing clever. Americans don’t get “clever”. They are not about the subtleties. They like big, brash, and mindless. That’s why Role Models did well only a week later. It is mindless. You don’t have to feel anything for the characters in that. It’s why High School Musical 3, Madagascar, Mama Mia, Iron Man, Fantasic Four 2, Transformers, Indiana Jones 4, and every other massive hit of the last few years does well. American Audiences dont like to think. And while Zack and Miri isn’t a huge think piece, it’s confrontational nature (and the nature of all Kevin’s films) is enough to make people back away from it. I thought it was funny. I really enjoyed it. But Kevin has to stop making everything look like an indy film and do something big. Kevin is in the big leagues now. Everyone knows who he is, and what he does. Throw them a curve ball and do something different and huge. You aren’t an independant film maker anymore. Use the resources you have. Make the big budget blockbuster. leave in the subtle cleverness for us fans, but make the overall presentation something shiny and distracting for the wider audience. Us fans will always love your work, and we will understand if you have to do something drastic to get a bigger audience. I personally wouldnt see you as a sell out. But if you’re worried about being called a sell out, imagine how much easier it is to take when your pockets are stuffed with cash.

  195. Steve Z Says:

Hey guys….don’t sweat the “Zack & Miri” grosses. You made another great movie that will have a lasting impact and will be celebrated like all of your other movies. Think about how “Mallrats” received by the public now. Your fans loved it when it came out and now everyone loves it. Your fans, like me, love “Zack & Miri” and everyone else will catch on.

    Thanks for making another classic!

  196. fanboy1 Says:

Ok, the movie probably earned the right amount for the quality of movie it was. I mean it’s certainly not blockbuster material. We’ve been hearing about it online since the: writing stages, filming, screenings…and this was all we got…an average at best outing.

Now Kevin wants to sulk, smoke weed, and lament that he’s overweight and his movie didn’t make huge bucks.

    WTF?!?!

We should all have these problems.

Go to Subway. Write some more comics. Enjoy your home in the California hills. But just stop crying about it like you’re world has ended…many people would kill to have your life.

  197. Kristina Says:

My crew and I loved Zack and Miri. I cannot WAIT to get it on DVD. Nothing you made has ever been crap. I cried and laughed. I must own the porno!

I am also waiting to get the next “Evening” too. You guys will have mad DVD sales.

I am happy to have you guys back. Your fandom loves you, but the economy was working against you.

Looking forward to more smod, the only podcast I look forward to hearing.

  198. Jack Says:

Stop consoling Kevin. He knows that people who listen to smod saw and liked his movie, for the most part. He also said he isn’t reading this shit, or anything online for that matter. You have to understand that this was his one shot at making a big budget, apatow-esque blockbuster. He sold out, and ended up grossing what he normally does. So, it wasn’t worth it. I watched Chasing Amy today, and may i say, “That’s the kind of shit, i want”. If Silent Bob isnt dropping pearls of insight in Red State, or whatever the fuck else movie Kevin gets paid to do, then fuck it. Z+M was funny, but not Kevin Smith funny. If Kevin wants to toke it up, let him. I like it better sober, but high Kevin has his own upsides. You’re not his fucking mothers.

  199. Brett Says:

Well worth the wait - thank you sir!!

  200. pewplewps Says:

Why does it take so long to get posted to iTunes? What’s up with that, huh?

  201. Tom Capps Says:

don’t let the bastards get you down.

  202. Matt S. Says:

Man, this is the first Smodcast where I really wanted to listen to it again immediately after the first run-thru. I really hope that we can find out why the Zack and Miri commentary wasn’t released. I feel secure in stating that the overall gross would’ve been higher at this point if that was released. Hopefully, the Weinstein Company isn’t to blame for this.

  203. David Says:

Kevin is the MAN. Generations of stoners will be loving his movies long after he is dead. Everyone talks about Mallrats like it was some theatrical flop, but in my opinion it’s one of his best movies. The Brody character alone made that movie better that the fucking pig swill being put out by most comedy writers today. Kevin’s movies appeal to his fans, screw the rest of the world. P.S. My wife and I watched Z+M then went home and had hot sex, thanks Kevin!

  204. Ted Says:

I bet David’s hot sex was funnier than Zach and Miri Make a Porno.

  205. BRETTALS Says:

funny shit guys, just as i was losing faith in podcasts

  206. Simon Says:

    Glad to see Smodcast back.

I like Zack & Miri, but nearly didn’t see it because of Seth Rogen. That guy has a certain audience for his type of low-brow humour and Kevin always has another higher brow level to his humour.

Imo, that’s what killed the opening. That its two incompatible type of humour. I liked the movie, but I would have like it better with Ben Affleck, or even and unknown in the lead.

And please stop hating on Jersey Girl in the Smodcasts, its my 2nd favourite Smith/Mosier film after Chasing Amy. That movie is excellent, with unstanding performances and a great story.

Good to hear you back. Great podcast :)

    Cheers,
    Simon.

  207. Cassandra Says:

I hope they don’t turn their next few Smodcasts into a multi-part saga about why the movie didn’t do as well as it should have. It’s pretty obvious that somebody messed up big time on the promotional and/or distribution side of things. Considering that they made a wide release feature film about making a porno with the word porno in the title it’s not exactly surprising that something like that would happen. They should consider themselves lucky that some crackpot didn’t take a shot at them like happened to Larry Flynt because that is how messed up and repressed people are about sex in this country. Why the geniuses who kind of have reinvented modern comedy (Apatow makes Smith-esque films, not the other fucking way ’round, if anybody is copying anybody!) didn’t expect a screw up of this type due to people freaking out about the nature of Zack and Mimi is beyond me. Personally I was half expecting a boycotting or banning shit storm that would have made the controversy over Dogma seem minor in comparison.

On a lighter note, nothing is funnier that listening to Kevin and Scott crack up about things that aren’t even all that funny in and of themselves just because of being high. Thank the Gods that the Smodcasts are back.

  208. Dmitriy Says:

Damn, I guess I was one of the few who contributed the $2.2 million opening day. I was also very disappointed by the box office, but now that it’s more in the past (sort of), I’m eager to hear the factors that you think let this happen.

  209. ryan fuckin' kelley Says:

One word to explain why Zack and Miri didn’t do that well: ECONOMY. I couldn’t afford to see it until the second week it was open. Most people I know are living paycheck to paycheck, so when they do go see a movie it has to be well worth it. The only problem with that is, most people go see films on the big screen for the cinematical experiance. Kevin Smith flicks tend to not be all that cinematical, to be that visual, ya know? So, I think that had a lot to do with it. Just wait til it comes out on dvd, that fuckin’ movie is gonna be huge on dvd.

  210. ryan loves salad tossing Says:

    You guys need a hug

  211. Ikaika Says:

F yeah!! New Smod!! And I can read all the comments!!

  212. Matthew Says:

Hey guys. Sorry to hear your flick didn’t do as well as you hoped. I saw it and thought it was good shit. Why the rest of the world didn’t I don’t think I’ll ever know. I work in film myself so i know a bit of the journey you were on. Hope you guys recover quick and keep making your amazing original movies.

    Rock on guys

  213. Bored of this Says:

You all need to stop kissing Smith’s ass. Zack & Miri was not funny, Threevening with Kevin Smith was not funny, and this was one of the worst SMods yet.

  214. somaholidays Says:

Loved it. Was waiting all month… started having Smod withdrawal. Then finally, there it was.

I actually kinda fully enjoyed slightly depressed, completely stoned, analytical, having-a-good-laugh smod. Just wish I was partaking also.

Love you guys. I think you’re awesome.

  215. Erin Smith Says:

I came from Tucson Arizona to New Jersey to see Kevin at the Q&A in Red Bank. I could tell his demeanor was different judging by the other Q&A’s. I feel bad he is disappointed. He and Scott deserve to do well. It is not ass kissing to say that. If you are a fan of the Smith movies, visit the site or listen to Smodcast then you feel the same. These are great guy’s and if you don’t agree why even make a comment or visit this site? Z&M was as a great watch and Kevin, Scott and the rest deserve every penny it makes!

  216. Kendra Says:

    I Agree with Simon!
    I am over Seth.

  217. Bobby Says:

So exactly how bad of a movie or a SModcast do these guys have to make before some of you Smith-ites will say, “Wow, NOT good”?

Seems to me Kevin could film himself shitting on a piece of bread and people would be praising it and saying, “Awesome! Don’t worry the masses will come around.” or “It deserved to make $100 million.”

There’s nothing wrong with some honesty. Seems to me if more people had shared with Kevin that Zach and Miri wasn’t all that funny in the early stages maybe his movie could have been improved upon.

  218. Buggie Says:

In response to “Kevin could film himself shitting on a piece of bread” … this would be a good film if done right, because it would be fresh, original, filled with lively dialogue and sincere. It is the masses of romantic sloshy cheese that is layered over the top of Z&M that had my stomach turning. Nothing wrong with mixing romance and porn, but not if the romance is cut and paste direct from a bad John Hughes flick.

  219. Geans Says:

Mosier doing voices (any kind of voices)…it doesn’t get much better.

  220. SteveDave Says:

I’m a big big fan of your work but i have to be honest i really didn’t care for Zack and Miri. The first reel was really funny but the second and third were terrible. The funniest thing about this movie was Justin Long. I just wish you guys went a different way with this one…

  221. SmithFan Says:

Kevin……yeesh. Dude, your movie was horribly marketed (no trailer until literally the month of release, the commercials were very un-funny and made the movie look stupid….

Seriously, where was the trailer during Pineapple Express? Tropic Thunder? Instead it doesn’t show till October and that pretty much went with the entire marketing……very last-minute, very un-funny.

Your movie is actually the 4th highest-grossing Weinstin Co film of all time…do you realize that?

Not to say it did well but clearly you expected a bit much. The studio that had Grindhouse flop (Bruce Willis? Etc. Etc. Etc.) is not capable of releasing a 100 mil+ film and that’s just the way it is. Opening it up on Halloween was the kiss of death. Not a good move.

That said, I loved the movie and clearly moviegoers did too since it held up very well over the weeks. It was an excellent movie but it was poorly marketed and that’s unfortunate. Yes the poster was banned but the poster shouldn’t have been released the MONTH the film opened…it should have been released months beforehand and therefore when it was banned there would have been time to come up with an adequate replacement.

Seriously, man…..it was marketed incorrectly. Judd Apatow’s next film’s already being promoted online…not opening till next summer. Nobody had heard of your movie until the month of its release. That’s unfortunately the way it is but don’t get yourself so down…..Changeling grossed a similar amount to Zack and Miri and it cost 20 million more to make and was directed by Clint Eastwood!

Sometimes marketing doesn’t connect with audiences and that’s the way it is. Nothing to get depressed about, you broke even, you have your highest-grossing film.

  222. Ikaika Says:

I agree with smithfan, I didn’t realize the movie came out on Halloween until you guys mentioned it on Smod the weekend before. A sad fact is that no one knows a good flick until they actually go out and see it. Millions of suckers get duped into shelling out for lame movies like Blair Witch Project. Good marketing tactics seem to go a long way.

Personally though, I don’t think it was your best. I’ve laughed way harder listening to smodcast, you guys could totally charge for it. Smodcast movie!!!!!!!

And stop smokin’ pot Kev. Jesus wouldn’t like it.

  223. Little Rascals Says:

    OMFG A NEW SMODCAST

  224. Michael Says:

    Wow.

First of all, it would be a lot of help, for us non film geeks, to be able to put 2.2 million in context. How did Star Wars open? Casablanca? Or, like, Jersey Girl?

Second of all, I loved the flick. I bet 99% of your fans did. Why didn’t it do well? In a country where “Dancing With The Stars” is a hit tv show? Hell, I don’t know. We have no taste?

Third of all, you guys are deeply talented and brilliant in so many ways. Whatever project you guys come up with, we will be here.

    Peace.

  225. Simon Says:

Just to add to Geans post: The Scott Mosier 30 min short-movie. Where he plays every character with different accents and costumes. Directed by Kevin and shown a la “Dr. Horrible’s sing a long blog”.

    Please.

    Cheers,
    Simon.

  226. qwer Says:

Ya its sad that what they resort to now is making a financial hit. I mean the way they talk about the movie (ie having a hit money making star) makes them sound more like business investors than…in a word, artists. I agree with some of you that after hearing this I kind of lost some respect for him as a director/writer. Its depressing to hear of him sitting around the opening weekend waiting anxiously for the boxoffice numbers. Sorry to say but he is a sell out. He’s only in the business now to afford his mansion and way of living. I dont think any of us should buy more of his dvds because of this fact, on the contrary, leaving him to realize his faults may help in the long run.

  227. The not so silent Bob Says:

I’ve got to say I would have loved to see a call back to the Viewaskewniverse as well. Even a silhouette of Jay and Bob against the bean-n-gone window. I loved the movie, I do blame the economy and the pseudo holiday. DVD sales will be huge. BRING BACK THE INDIGNANT CANADIAN, I miss him so.

  228. STUDIODYNAMO Says:

I’m amazed that guys so smart never picked up on the fact that “PORNO” in the title is a huge problem. I thought that they would wise up and change the title before the publicity started but … no. What woman other that his wife goes to see anything with Porno in the title? So that cuts out a good deal of the female audience and the date crowd. Leaving desperate teen boys and dirty old men.

  229. STUDIODYNAMO Says:

And, oh yeah. Never complain about making money because it wasn’t as much as you wanted to make, you petty fucks. that’s real.

  230. I Still Believe Is A Great Song Says:

On further recollection… no, I was right.

  231. David Says:

It was a funny movie who the fuck cares if it doesn’t have a high gross, you had fun making it and you’re still making money at the end of the day.

  232. Carrie Says:

Guys, don’t even worry about it. Becuase of the nature of the film, it didn’t get distributed in a way that would make it easily accessable to everyone. Hell, I had to travel to the Magnolia theater in downtown Dallas to see it, but it was SOOOO worth it! Esp. since they sell alcohol at the Magnolia; it was great to sit there with my Scotch and watch as funny movie. However, Scotch through the nose HURTS!
This is gonna be huge on DVD. Again, don’t even worry about it. I’ve alredy got my e-mail on Amazon to get a heads up when the release date is ready. PLEASE release a director’s cut!!!!

  233. richard Says:

I just heard the word fontanelle more times in 20 minutes than I had in my whole life. It was beautiful.

  234. Matt Says:

I loved this smodcast. Fuck the haters; Kevin and Scott talk about what they want to.

  235. Carrie Says:

Is it just me, or was Scott totally channeling Father Guido Sarducci during the therapist roll play?

  236. DP Says:

AWESOME! haven’t listened yet, but will tonight! CANT WAIT!

Alll I want for christmas is new smod… and now I gots it!

    Wooohooo!

  237. Kris Is An Idiot Says:

I love it when some foreigner generalizes and insults Americans. Especially someone from the great country of Australia, whose grand contributions to world culture have been Crocodile Dundee, Crocodile Hunter, and nothing.

And is it me or did “Role Models” actually have a heart and a brain? It got great reviews, and David Wain and Paul Rudd don’t really make crap. Wrong example to use, Kris. Same with “Iron Man”. Smart blockbuster. Time Magazine has it on their top 10 of 2008 over “The Dark Knight”.

So next time you try to be clever, please watch what you disparage and don’t pick on countries better than yours. Thank you.

  238. Julie Says:

    Hey Guys!
We’re not real rich. In the pre-kid days, we’d go see every movie you guys made in the Theater. Now with babysitters at $10/hr, we rarely (really, really rarely) go to see anything in the theater. We do plan to see your movie on DVD. Don’t lose heart - maybe your key demographic is in the same position that we are - can’t afford to go see stuff we like in the theater, so we just gotta wait for the DVD. Good luck anyway!!!
    j

  239. Scott Says:

I don’t think I’d want to hear the commentary track for ZAMMAP right now because it would be two hours about how shit should have gone. Let’s hope Kev can do a fitting track for the DVD/Bluray that points to how great the film truly is. I feel like Phyciatrist Walt needs to tell Kevin to quit fucking crying and get over it. Just kidding, fuck marketing…..seriously, get over it.

  240. deadapostle Says:

There was a lot of great stuff in this Smod. Thank you so much for coming back. This year has been hell in reality, but Smodcast has been something that has helped to brighten it up. Of course, Smodcast brightens it up, flips it over, and does it raw and dirty. Afterward it takes a dump in its sink and calls its sister for some secondary action.

  241. Dr. Know Says:

My theory? It was the marketing. And by extension, the Weinsteins. Very curious to see if Smith has the balls to bite the hand that signs his checks. Although presumably the company is in trouble already and dropped the ball on QT and RR already, so Smith is at least in good company.

Someone on AICN commented in a post that Z&MMAP was opening soon and he hadn’t really peeped any ads for it. And I don’t remember Seth and Banks doing a lot of press, either. Be very interested to see if Smith takes it up with the (kinda) biggest comedy star in the country right now.

  242. A Total Cracker Says:

This movie is like every other form of entertainment in the world, it made fans and it lost fans. I took two of my residents (im an RA) to it on opening day and we watched as high school musical filled up and only a hand full of people went to Z&M. The two i took had never seen a KS movie and totally fell in love with it, we ended up spenind that whole night and most of the next day watching viewaskew movies, documentaries, and movies starring askew stars. New fans to replace those that didnt appreciate it.

Anyone have this up on a TORRENT? im on dialup and it keeps dropping connection before i can get it downloaded.

  243. Steve Speaks Says:

All this podcast time to whine about Zach and Miri.
There’s another 90+ minutes of my life wasted…I wasted the first seeing that movie.
I thought cheeseball romantic comedies like this died in the 80’s.
The biggest laugh in the movie was how lame it was when they had sex the first time and it was “oh so memorable”.
Stick to what you know best Kevin because romance isn’t it.

  244. PayToPlay Says:

Let me preference this by saying that I liked the movie. In general, it was good to see you guys break out into a different place than the Jersey/Silent Bob and Jay world. It wasn’t a great movie but it was good.

Now listening to this podcast …. Waaaaaaaaa Boo Hoo… Kevin … why don’t you go back into your pot filled haze and have a few more twinkees. Why don’t you grow a pair… Not every movie will be accepted to the masses, no matter what you were told by a few industry insiders. For Christ sakes, you have the word “Porno” in the title… You play to a certain audience.

The most bold thing that this movie states is that porno is becoming main stream… Still we live a Puritan state of being… especially here in Massachusetts (where there was some controversy with some poster on the MBTA). Whether we like it or not perceptions are everything.

It was painful to hear you rant like that … and yes you were ranting and bitching about the way things turned out.

then again … I could turn the podcast off at anytime.

    good luck

  245. Moobys37 Says:

    Hey, fuck Steve Speaks.

    That’s all I got

  246. Mark Says:

Stuck in a hotel in Austria and been off the internet radar - damn thing won’t talk to my ipod, but trip home will be happier for catching the new smod when I hit home turf.

Thanks and all the best for Christmas chaps…

  247. Trevor Says:

Look, I’ve never been one to criticize a SMod. The show’s free and, if there’s a bad episode, you get what you paid for, right? And if you get a good one, then you got something for nothing. Sounds good to me.

That being said, this is the most frustrating episode I’ve ever listened to. It started out with the two of you guys saying you were going to tell us the story about what happened with the movie. But the whole episode meandered so much that you never got past the opening Friday. There were long digressions in which you were just arguing over what the best metaphor was for everything that happened with the movie. “It’s like an invisible imp–” “No, it’s like you have no legs…”

You know what it was like? It was like you were trying to get to someplace that you really wanted to get to, but getting there required running through glue. For, like, an hour. That’s what this episode felt like. I love your weed fueled meanderings in most episodes, but I got so frustrated listening to this thing expecting to hear a story that never got told. I was almost yelling at my iPod on the damn train. If you had started out by very quickly telling the whole story and then went back to elaborate on it, it would have been much easier to deal with. Once I realized, towards the end, that you were never going to tell the story, it was much easier to listen to.

I still look forward to the next episode. Hope you can cover, maybe, the rest of the opening weekend? Or, at the very least, the Saturday after the opening.

  248. kix Says:

    I CANT WAIT FOR

    69!!!!!!!!!!

    AND SMODCAST 69 TOO…..

  249. jefforourke Says:

jesus christ, stop fucking whining. you get paid to make movies for a living.

  250. Big Dusty Says:

Can’t wait to check this out

  251. Dustin Meredith Says:

I saw Z&M twice & was waiting for the “not-commentary” SModcast so I could go see it in the theater a third time while listening to it.

I think that Smod #68 may be a little bit too inside baseball for some people, but I understand where you’re coming from.

Why don’t you have a SMod with Robert Rodriguez & QT? They obviously had a similar experience with Grindhouse & I would pay money to hear the compare &contrast on that one.

  252. Jonas Says:

Jesus Christ, these comments have been some of the harshest I’ve ever seen.

  253. Arthur Says:

    1. Quit smoking pot. Regardless of every great 60’s rock album, it does kill creativity and intelligence. Period.

    2. I’m going to put a gun in my mouth if you make another J&SB or Clerks film. I’ve loved ALL of your work (haven’t seen ZMMAP yet), but don’t listen to the fans wanting more J&SB please.

    3. The American movie going audience is daft, and would rather see a talking dog movie than your films. Deal with that. Make a talking dog movie, and you’ll have a hit.

  254. Americant Says:

Who cares what they talk about. stop thinking of smodcast as a prime source of information just sit back and laugh..they manage to make me do that a lot, even if they dont finish what they were talking about.. who cares.

  255. Xander Says:

God forbid a man wanna make some dough. I Liked the movie and feel bad for it’s underwhelming performance. Dont worry Kev, the fans still care about your work.

  256. goodbadattitude Says:

Line of the show “Oh, I’d rather put my dick in you to cum”

  257. Mario Says:

    Cmon! Cheer up, guys!

You´re doing a great work of all u do.

  258. Kris Is An Idiot Is An Idiot Says:

You just complained about when foreigners generalize and insult Americans and then you become one of those foreigners insulting Australians. Get off your high horse.

  259. Cucumber Jones Says:

Hey pussies, quit your whining. I’m sick of this BS and I only read about 7 posts. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it; it really isn’t more complex than that. Quit your bitching and stop acting like 13-year-old emo girls. It really is hard for me to believe you are men out there. I’ve never seen such pussies of men. Maybe you’re secretly Kevin-haters, I don’t know…

    Either way, shut up.

  260. Steve Says:

Role Models was better. tell kevin to stop crying about his millions of dollars.

  261. NatiOne24 Says:

I have never seen so much complaining about something that was free and not forced upon anyone. I can understand not liking an episode, but if they want to do an hour of scraping a chalkboard, it is still a free project that they do for fun. And as far as the pot remarks, I know plenty of intelligent, creative pot smokers. Ignorance makes you less intelligent, and a lack of influences is what dampens creativity.

  262. Matt Says:

“Why don’t you have a SMod with Robert Rodriguez & QT? They obviously had a similar experience with Grindhouse & I would pay money to hear the compare &contrast on that one.”

I agree this would be the best SMod of all time. and would pay heavy out the ass to hear it. However, I don’t know how good of friends kevin is with them. new SMod tonight?

  263. Bil Says:

    Kevin,
Please stop wallowing in the weed. You’ve had enough. Or at least don’t podcast high anymore. It makes you sound like a child.
Oh, also: Go outside and go for a walk. You’re going to spend your whole life never knowing what it’s like to not be a fat guy unless you move around once in a while. This is coming from a dude who loves you, and one who knows what it’s like to struggle.

  264. MavLee Says:

In the Clerks 2 extras Kev gave QT a screening of clerks 2 (pretty sure Robert Rodriguez was there also, i would have to watch it again though), so they are friends to some extent. That would be a insightful smod. But what would it be called (instead of smodcast for that one episode) ? lol

  265. Rick E. Says:

HAven’t listened yet, but have read many comments and have one myself…I know who Kevin Smith is…people I bring up his name to know who I am talking about…WHO THE FUCK IS APATOW AND WHY ARE WE OBSESSED WITH HIM?
btw - loved Zach and Miri

  266. Alex d Says:

    @bil

Shut the fuck up,he’s a grown man,he can do whatever the fuck he wants. If he wants to smoke weed,do podcasts high, and get deppressed it’s his choice. So fuck off.

  267. Alex d Says:

oh and arthur fuck you too, you douche.

  268. Dave Says:

I’m glad SModcast is back and this was a good episode. But I hope the episodes where Kevin is high are few and far between. They’re fun once in a while, but he’s not as sharp or as funny as when he’s sober. Much like weed itself, it’s great from time to time, but people who use it daily are just obnoxious.

  269. mexitalian Says:

    @Dave

Agreed. I wouldn’t go as far as to say obnoxious. All other points conceeded. Mosier was the saving grace of this last one. Hope the critical comments don’t get taken badly.

As always greatful for these. Peace.

  270. michelle Says:

wow. just, wow. it’s certainly easy for people to be self righteous when they are annonymus.

  271. yanck Says:

hurry up with part 2 this is good stuff

  272. Zac Says:

Arthur from about a dozen posts up, none of the points you articulate make any sense. Number one, if the man wants to smoke some weed, let him, its up to no one to judge him on that. Personally I enjoy the SMods that he isnt high better, but Im not going to bitch at him for actuallly smoking weed. Second, Kevin is successful because he was able to corner a demographic who enjoyed his humor. If he makes more movies with JS&B then there will be people who enjoy it and people who dont. If you dont like it dont watch it, but unless you’re Martin Scorcese, dont judge how he goes about his filmmaking.

  273. JayPeck Says:

Z&M was 1st KS film in theater since Clerks (gotta love those DVD’s). A non-horror movie (regardless of quality) on Halloween is like opening Grindhouse on Easter weekend (wait, that did happen). Screw the economy, blame the DISTRIBUTOR. Title hurt ads, even outside Utah. Regsrdless of all above, this movie deserved better (as did Grindhouse). Hope your next film fares better. Snootches!

  274. Josh Says:

    @ Jaypeck

All of Kevin Smith’s films have been in theaters, unless your from outside the US.

  275. gillian Says:

    to Jaypeck:
Or if you were outside Europe, Canada, Australia.. Or if you blinked for some films like Jersey Girl, which was not as bad as it was built up to be.

  276. Jill Says:

i am just guessing here, but i think part of the problem may be just the economy in general right now, along with when the movie opened. my family, like most families i know, is pinching pennies and trying to cut back on expenses. times are scary, and entertainment is a luxury when you need money to keep your house warm and your kids clothed and fed. my husband and i would have loved to go see this movie, but it was just a matter of money. last year we probably would’ve been able to go, this year money is much tighter. i don’t follow box office openings or grosses or anything like that, but i would not be surprised if films across the board are making less. people are losing their jobs left and right and most people i know are scared about what the future of this country has in store for us.

  277. Fulltime Casual - An Australian Film and TV Podcast » Kevin Smith is My Hero. Says:

[...] In episode 68 of Smodcast, Kevin Smith and his producer Scott Moiser sit down and try and work out why Zack and Miri made far less money than it should have. Its a frank and heartbreakingly funny discussion, something so rare in an industry of bullshit press releases. They never really get to the answer, but they didn’t really need to. The Halloween release date ensured the target demographic for the film were out all weekend getting shit-faced, the word “Porno” did the rest. [...]

  278. Fat Joe Says:

The dvd sales will produce the money your pals promised, as for the discussion, side-splitting, outstanding banter. When you guys just keep it real and babble, that’s the stuff that makes me listen. Future Mosier was hysterical. Keep it real.

  279. Nathaniel Iwaszko Says:

Hey man, don’t let it get you down. I’m an indie filmmaker from Melbourne, Australia who is struggling to make his first feature with roughly the same money you had in Clerks. Look how far you’ve come man! So the numbers weren’t great - I thought it was an awesome film - and we have your original poster up at our cineplex! ^_^ You are living the dream man, don’t forget that. Viva La Stoners! Red State will knock the fucking box office away man - just make sure its released on the same day internationally so I can help ya hit the numbers. You’re huge in Australia man so if Zack and Miri had been released here you would have - an extra mill or two - but hey we’re a small population so :) Rock on!

  280. Arthur Says:

Don’t piss on me because I don’t suffer from hero worship. Kevin is a human being, not a God.

  281. denzel Says:

    journey mos is fuckin awsome

  282. croduck Says:

No one went to the movies that weekend!! The number one movie only made 15mill. Friday night Halloween is a terrible release day. Adults are with their kids trick or treating, costume parties or bars!!

  283. croduck Says:

    http://www.boxofficeguru.com/110308.htm

  284. croduck Says:

p.s. the weekend total for all movies was only 86mill.
The following weekend it was 136mill.
Whoever decided to release the movie on Halloween should be fired or resign immediately!

  285. Angela Says:

I skipped work on Halloween to see this movie during the day because I had to take my kids out that night. I think it is great and that the dvd will make lots of money. The economy is down and you have to remember that lots of people don’t have the money to go see things at the movies. So quit putting yourself down and remember you have a huge fan base and that lots of money is not everything! Go look with your diet. Your self-esteem will improve after you lose weight. I promise, it helped me! At least you have made the 30mil!

  286. KILLER Says:

Money is not everthing Kev,from a guy who still at 27 live’s at home,no car,no girlfriend and loseing my hair, stop bitching.

  287. Jay Says:

HEY! i loved Zack and Miri and i would totally buy the DVD xD first of all…turned out to be the first “date?” i went with this girl and it turned out to be the funniest date i’ve ever been to. it’s one memory that we’ll never forget and we both thank you…both for giving us a very memorable and somewhat akward first date xD

i don’t care what anyone says, Seth Rogan was awesome, Elizabeth Banks was awesome, the rest of the cast like Mewes and Craig Robinson, hell even Randal! and everyone else…it was an awesome fucking movie.

look at it this way, it did ROCK the foundations of movie making. probably the reason why nobody liked it b/c everyone’s sense of humor died…and i notice it’s a growing trend. today’s teeny kid generation just don’t get this shit -_- it’s like i need a fucking blackboard to describe every detail of the joke just to make them understand the punchline. it’s these kids that have never seen Clerks or Mallrats or Chasing Amy.

kudos to you Kev/Mose, keep doing what you’re doing =D

  288. molly Says:

i thought that movie fuckin’ rocked. i can’t believe it didn’t do more business than it did. maybe it’ll find its audience later on dvd, like mallrats. good luck guys.
