All good things must come to an end....
I must report, with regret, that this will be my final column of the CGC Hall of Shame. No, it isn't because I have seen the error of my ways (haha) nor I am being pressured by some outside force that feels threatened by such a column. Simply, it is just time to move on. I feel I've done all I can here and hopefully this column has proven to be more than just a diversion every month.
As you see in the picture to the left, reading has the power of taking us out of our ordinary lives and catupulting us into a world of the unimaginable. That's the gift of reading.
Such a gift cannot be enjoyed or shared when a book is encapsulated in plastic with an over-priced sticker. Yes, there are situations when the CGC does benefit the comic collecting community; however, the theme of this column was when this good intention went askew. Greed and profits are what drive the CGC collecting phenomena. Not preservation.
So the next time you walk into a comic book shop or scan the ads on eBay or the CBG, remember two things. One, you are the consumer. A comic book's worth is only what you are willing to spend. And two, comics exist to entertain and to enlighten us. That's the real value of a comic book.
Best, Terrence
