Anything? Any thoughts on them?

Not quite yesterday, but monday I picked up Exiles and Ultimate X-men. I haven't actualy gotten to read them yet for all the friggin writing assignments the profs jam down my throat, but they're the only two monthlies I bother with anymore and I'm well acquanted with their respective series.

Ultimate X-Men is decent, there are no shortage of interesting plot twists, but the unabashed shock value of most of them leave me feeling dirty. I'm not particularly fond of it, but as filler between installments of the X-Movies it serves it's purpose. Oh, and I never thought I'd get tired of Kubert, but I've taken quite a liking to Finch's pencils. One of the prettiest books on the market, period.

Exiles, on the other hand, is truly a book worth the shame of being blacklisted as a comic book reader in the dating circuit. I stopped reading marvel after onslaught, when everything went downhill. This picks up right after and offers world after world of either unique "what if" concepts, or surprising takes on cliched scenarios (the expendability of the cast also keeps you on your toes). The character development is truly the star; characters are dynamic and deal with psychological trauma in varying ways, there's a sense of growth instead of an adherence to archetypes. The mary-go-round art switches lately produce some hit and miss and a whole lot of blah, but it's never deterred me from the story.

Oh, and I'm sure there's all kinds of great books I'm missing out on (I'm sorry I never got Beautiful Killer for one), but with no comic shop within a reasonable distance, I'm limited to Waldenbooks and the TPBs at Borders.

Sadly, the closest shop for me is an hour away, so I only get to them once a month or two. BUT! I have been catching up with Graphic Novels at the library (VERY COOL!). I just finished MARVELS, BLACK PANTHER, and ASTRO CITY... and I'm about to (FINALLY!) read MAUS!

Ult X-Men, Ult Spidey, 100 Bullets, Sentinel, Daredevil.

I am completely devoid of thought. If intelligent thought were required for buying comics, the industry would be screwed.

last week I picked up a few graphic novels:
Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Spider-man, and X-Men 2
The only place I have the ability to aquire my comics in my area is Books a Million but it's all good.
I ordered Kevin Smith's DareDevil and Star Wars MangaVerse(online). /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I have to go on the weekend, typically, and I'm clearing out a massive backlog from poorer days, so the odds of me being up-to-date are nil. Instead, I'm clearing out massive arcs at once. One week I'll load up on Warren Ellis, the next I'll get a years worth of Batman, etc etc.

THis past trip included, and I hate to admit it, the last chunk of Azreal. It got me thinking: I hated the book, didn't enjoy reading it, but kept buying it. Why? To have every issue? Out of habit? Because I knew it would end eventually? oes anybody else do this? I know I'm not the only one. Sonic the Hedgehog is still being published after over ten years. It's outlasted Sandman! Besides quality, why do you buy what you buy?

I dunno about entire series but no matter how bad a story I tend to try and get all the issues for that story at least, especially on the just started out comics. sonic still gets published? heh I used to read that since issue #1, sad fact. I even remember "the birth of sonic and robotnik" to this day /forums/images/icons/ooo.gif

I'll always remember the little comic shop 15mins from my home when I was a kid.

I use to buy the 4 (at the time) Superman titles, Spawn, which other Batman graphic novel was on the shelf at the time, and also the occasional Dark Horse mini-series involving the Aliens/Predator/terminator franchises.

I remember every Friday getting my £15 pocket money and trying to work out my change and how much I could spend on other titles. When my money went up to £20 I couldn't believe my luck.

This'll sound odd, but whenever I buy a new novel, etc, the smell of fresh paper always takes me back there.

holy crap! 15 pounds spending money! (you were definitely a good boy when you were a kid)

I know what you mean about the smell of comic books (or just books in general). I go into a book store and it sort of reminds me of when I use to go biking with a friend downtown to pick up comic books at the used book store. you'd open the box and finger through all the comics. Man, I go into a Dymocks or Borders and open up a paperback and the smell is ingrained in the memorybank.

On a shamecorner note: I haven't purchased a comic book in 23 years.
