Cool Lucky Bastadges!

Thought I'd start a thread for sharing instances of good luck and fortune.

Last week, I went to Texas to pick up a huge set of tools my grandmother's husband left me in his will. Grandma Marie said anything else in the garage could go with me as long as no one else had already laid claim to it.

I took the file cabinet.

Squirreled away behind the manuals for every piece of equipment Bob ever owned was a piece of black, waxed paper rolled around something. Grandma unrolled it just enough to see it was some sort of Oriental prints. She handed them to me and I put them in a shoe box in the cab of the truck.

Later, back at my mom's, I unrolled them and this is what I found:

The one above is the most sedate and safe for work viewing.

Through some research, I discovered these are shunga.

Most examples I've found on line are smaller versions that have been glued to scrolls or into books.

These have never been mounted, are uncut, and absolutely gorgeous. To my untrained eye, they appear to be from the Edo period (1603-1868).

And I have a full set of twelve.

\m/$$$$\m/

Marie's husband, Bob, was in the Navy during WWII and stationed in Guam afterwards. I'm guessing that's when he acquired them, 1945-1950ish.

Awesomesauce.

I need a safe deposit box...

Talk about a covet coven...what a killer find.

Thanks for sharing JK.

You should frame those those bad babies and display them if Jen will let you.

The lighters have been in a shoe box for... forty years. I don't really think there is any danger. None of them have flints and any fuel would have evaporated about... 39 years & eleven months ago...

Isn't that usually the last thing a person says before turning around and noticing the whole table on fire?

Wow. Amazing find. Awesome! Congrats!

Photo all of them. get them appraised if possible (not as easy as it sounds I bet)

But first, get them into a bank deposit box pronto. for, at least, the best reason (climate control). most vaults have low oxygen and humidity control. and will most likely never flood. they could be worth a few grand at the very least.

PS, sweet lighters. Keep those too. They are collectable too (and probably in great condition). I love the classic style. I have a few. Penguin, Champ-ette, Wind Master, hell even a fairly rare Craftsman "Vista" with a clear plastic shell and a fly hook inside.

Bob was a big fan of Ronson lighters. There're about six of them in a shoe box- one is still in it's original packaging, never opened, never used Another is leather wrapped. Even have a spare parts/cleaning kit. \m/

But yeah, by the end of the week, the prints are going into a safe deposit box. I've got a friend from high school that lives in Japan and might be able to find someone who, if anything, can at least look at the digital picts. Also, the Consulate General of Japan shares the same office building as Jen's company. maybe they know someone local...

Thanks! I took pictures of all twelve but they're not really safe for work.
