Hello, Loyal Readers:
As many of you may have realized, I've been a bit erratic posting columns as of late. This is not because I've become so disillusioned with music
I can't even bring myself to write about it. In fact, recently I've been
enjoying a lot of new music, which is really refreshing. At the same time I've also gotten a lot of offers to do freelance writing for a decent amount of change. For the next month, I'll be working on a special assignment that
is very cool and very top secret. Unfortunately, it will take a lot of time and energy and I'm going to have to truncate (that means shorten, people) Perfect Pitch. I'll still recommend CDs each week but that'll be it. I can't
wax philosophical on the state of the music world until Nov. 1. I appreciate
your understanding through this crazy time and if you come back, I'd really
appreciate it.

INTERPOL, Antics (Matador)
Ever wonder if a band will follow-up a surprisingly good debut with a more
than just competent sophomore effort? INTERPOL manages to do just that with
Antics. It still sounds just like INTERPOL but there's more of it.
That's a good thing.
Favorite Track: "Slow Hands"
GREEN DAY, American Idiot (Reprise)
I have no idea how GREEN DAY is still relevant in 2004 but they are. American Idiot
proves again that the group not only plays better than almost anyone in punk,
but they can write catchy tunes, too. Taking on this concept-like disc is
also daunting and they actually pull it off. No matter your politics, this is
still a blast of a record. And it might make you think at the same time.
Crazy.
Favorite Track: "American Idiot"
MARE, Self-Titled (Hydra Head)
I'm sure most of you remember my love for Hydra Head band, PELICAN. Their new
labelmates share a lot of their aesthetic but take on a vocalist. This
immediately proves PELICAN did the right thing going instrumental. But MARE
isn't horrible, they just rely on the screaming/hardcore singing we've all
come to expect.
