JOHN FRUSCIANTE, Inside of Emptiness (Record Collection)
I don't know when it happened, but sometime between his first solo record
and his latest, JOHN FRUSCIANTE escaped a lackadaisical songwriting style and
blossomed into a forceful writer. From his quivering vocals to simply
stunning guitar-playing, Frusciante takes listeners by the hand through his
BEACH BOYS-inspired soundscape on Inside of Emptiness. The songs are
often hard-charging but there's always a sense of true emptiness. Never have
I heard an album title that so fits the music on it.
A GIRL CALLED EDDY, A Girl Called Eddy (Anti)
If you need a throaty voice to carry you through the cold dark night, then A
GIRL CALLED EDDY might be the perfect answer to your calls. Erin Moran is
the voice behind the name and the production by PULP's Richard Hawley and
Colin Elliot give her all the aid she could ever want on this somber but
soulful disc. Not an everyday listen but a great mood-setter.
VOODOO GLOW SKULLS, Addicion, Tradicion, Revolucion ( Victory
Records)
Every time I get a ska CD, I wonder, "who is still listening to ska?" But I
guess there is a group out there somewhere, and they most likely will enjoy
the latest from the VOODOO GLOW SKULLS, who were always one of the best of
the somewhat limited genre. While not as slickly produced as their Epitaph
work, the raw sound actually helps and gives a gritty edge to all those
horns.
